Can the 12mm pin be removed?

NO, I bought this on 1/10/2022 and the pin cannot be removed. It shows a hex nut in the picture, but mine is riveted on with no way to remove the center pin.

What size is the nut?

It fits into a 25.4mm or 1" wrench.

Is the internal cavity deep enough to go over the left 12 mm axle spacer to allow removal of the center lock brake disc nut? Needs to be about 15 mm.

No Problem. You should have a few mm to spare.

Do I need to buy this instead of old/regular 5.2 which works with 5mm skewer wheels? It's not like the cassette is not centered threading the ring on

No, the FR-5.2 would work or the FR-5.2G with the guide pin also works very well.
