No, this item is not "backyard" compostable. Do NOT toss it into your personal compost, it's not designed for that. These are rated as "commercially compostable", that is that can be broken down in municipal facility that has the proper technology in place. Sadly, very few communities have access to this as most compost facilities don't have the capability: "Currently, only a few hundred of the roughly 4,000 composting facilities in the U.S. have the ability to accept food scraps and a much smaller subset can accept bio-plastics." Are the deminsions taken from the flat serface on the inside or over all lip to lip?

For the 9" and 7" that I just received, the dimensions are from edge to edge, including the entire plate, not just the flat inner part.

Overall, they function very well! I haven’t noticed any sogginess or leakage, they have good structure and texture, perfect size (not too big or too small), no smell, the color is nice and earthy if that’s something you enjoy. Compostable and all the good stuff. (See below “update 2” that addresses this part) HOWEVER, they all (like on each and every plate) have this huge embossed relief on it saying BPI compostable, “commercially compostable only”, “facilities may not exist in your area”. This is not ideal for serving and is just a busy eyesore in general. I’m not using these to serve anybody so I don’t really care that much, but I will probably not buy these ones again until they get rid of that feature. Just keeping that info on the package is more than fine, we don’t need it on every plate. Other than that, it’s an excellent product! *Update* Changed from 3 to 4 stars for customer service. The product is great and the customer service is fantastic! They by no means asked for an amendment to my review, in fact their message even plainly stated that wasn’t the purpose of their reaching out. They purely wanted to make things right if I wasn’t satisfied with their product. They deserve my money for their good product, and they earned the extra star for their faithfulness to their customers. I will happily update to five stars if and/or when they amend the issue with the embossing. *Update 2* It’s been a long while since I’ve gotten these again since my initial review and update, but I wanted to circle back around to them. Glad I did! They updated the design with no embossing this time! They look great. So, true to my word, I have updated to the five stars they have rightfully earned. Big thank you to the company for listening their customers!
