Review: Needed replacement fan - My four year old Microsoft replacement 360 gave me the overheat red rings earlier in the week. Let it cool down and started it up and noticed one of the fans wasn't spinning. Started looking online and came across this fan. Since my xbox is WAY out of warranty I decided to give it a shot at replacing the fan myself. Found a couple good guides online and ordered not only the fan but also a $7 tool kit. That $7 was well spent! I highly recommend getting the kit. Being a Prime member I received the fan and tool kit within two days and disconnected all the misc wires from my 360. Following the online instructions to pull the xbox apart was amazingly easy. There was a TON of lint/dog hair still in the case even though I regularly can air all the vents. Replacing the fan is super simple and putting the unit back together was a snap. I was really amazed how quick the entire process was. I moved it back to the tv and hooked everything up, pushed the power button and..... NOTHING. WTF? I was terrified I had fried something. Before losing it I followed the power cord and it had come loose from where it plugs into the brick! Everything re-plugged and hit the power button and SWEET!. Nice green glow from back of the unit and running fine. It has been three days so far and everything is working fine. Three days might not be long you are thinking but that is a Friday, Saturday and Sunday of my son playing GTA5, COD Ghosts, BF4 and downloading Saints Row 3 (for free). He stress tested it VERY well. My less than professional opinion on the fan is as follows: Fan noise - My fan was apparently dying, but even at its prime, this new fan is much quieter. Air flow - Flows a lot more air than old unit with one dead fan :) It does seem to push more air out the back than I remember. Part may be also to opening the case and pulling lint out. Heat - After my son running the 360 for a good 5 plus hours the side of the case was barely warm. It used to be hot to the touch. Installation. - Can you change a light bulb? Can you follow instructions? If yes then you can install this fan. Please note, the fan has NO instructions. Go online to a site like llama.com and follow their 360 disassembly guide. Also i HIGHLY reccommed getting the $7 xbox tool kit. Money well spent. Overall this was a great buy and hope to get another year out of the 360 before I upgrade to a One. If anything happens with the fan I will update this review. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Jeff Review: Works exactly as advertised (if you read the fine print!) - I have an older 360, one of the first to feature the HDMI output slot. It got the rrod once (but admittedly, that was probably my fault trying to use an improper power supply in a vehicle). I just put this fan into the unit. Although the fan itself comes with no instructions, a couple of quick searches on YouTube will find you all of the guidance you need to remove the case and remove the old fan. Once the old unit is out, reverse your steps with the new one and you will be golden. Don't let the title of "Whisper" and the slogan of "silent lighted fan for the Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 Elite" fool you: this sucker is only marginally quieter than the OEM. However, if you look on the back, the box tells you that this unit promises a 7% reduction in noise and a 58% increase in air flow. While I cannot quantitatively confirm this, the fan feels like it is pushing out a lot more air than the OEM and sounds slightly quieter. I personally don't have a problem with the noise; for me it is an excuse to pump up the game volume. The primary issue for me is increasing the lifespan of my Xbox 360 so I do not need to put out for a new console, and a fan that moves this much more air is worth that to me (even if the advertising is a bit misleading). I would give this item a 4.5 out of 5 if possible; the reduction in noise is marginal, but the increase in airflow is quite significant.

Impressed
First off, I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you no longer have an active warranty on your console. Changing the fans will void your warranty. Getting to the fans is a bit of a pain in the butt, but I was able to complete the entire project of replacing the fans in less than an hour, including the time it took to search youtube for a xbox dissambly video and getting together my tools. These fans are nice. They slid right in, and installed perfectly. In my case, I had to use an included power adapter to connect the fans. These are definitely quieter than the original fans, even before they started making horrible noises. They seem to move a decent amount of air, though I can't tell if its more or less than the original fans. They also emit a nice green glow from the back of the console. Overall, I'm quite pleased with my purchase.

It works
It was easier to replace this fan than I thought. A bit scary to open your Xbox but once your warranty is over, why not, right? I had a 360 Elite where the DVD drive died; it made grinding noises for a while then refused to open. From the day I bought the system the drive was crazy loud. I ended up returning it to Microsoft for repair even though the unit was out of warranty. The M$ repair service was quick, they ended up just replacing my box with what I assume was a refurb. The new DVD drive was quiet, but the new fans were amazingly noisy, really shockly noisy where it almost seemed like I was on a hidden camera TV show or something. So I traded in an absurdly loud drive for a ridiculously loud set of fans. I was trying so hard to be a happy camper too. I use the 360 as a Media Center connected device, and with Netflix being so wonderful as well, I figured it's time to replace those horrific stock fans since my warranty is shot. The new fans are a tiny bit quieter than the fans I had originally, and a fair amount quieter than the joke fans that came on my refurbed unit. The green coloring may be interesting to you if you are the type of person who puts flame or "no fear" stickers on your car, or if you are too young to drive. I saw a different review that claimed the new fans made about 90% of the noise of the original fans. That seems about right. To restate, you will reduce your noise by about 10%, and add a questionable green glow. Anything to make those fans quieter is worth it to me. Come on Microsoft, hop on the clue bus and work on the fan noise for your next version of this otherwise fantastic console.

Very bright and cheery; cools effectively and less loudly
Installation was a breeze, thanks to iFixit's clear instructions to disassemble the Xbox 360. Included is an adapter that converts the standard square 4-pin connector to a flat 3 or 4-pin connector to use with a traditional pc mini-molex connection. This wasn't necessary for my particular xbox model, but I can imagine it being useful for others, if need be. Fan worked on my first try powering on the xbox after installation, and I was impressed at the lime-green cheery light this produced. I also noticed a significant drop in noise coming from the xbox, while the thrust from the fan was a gentle breeze out the back grille. Recommended top replace any Xbox 360 stock fan to improve noise, cooling effectiveness, and overall aesthetics.

AWESOME!!!
I have the Halo 3 edition console I got it 2 days after H3 came out, it got the red ring of doom a few months ago, so I fixed it myself, and warranty was almost done, so I dont care it was voided, but becasue it was voided and done with and my own xclamp fix was done, I though a green light would be great. This fan IS quiet and if its not quiet in your xbox you have another problem, this fan runs a nice little purr and I love the glow out the back of my 360. Very nice over the crappy original fan. Note to people installing it, this will void your warranty, and when you install it test it to make sure all of the lights and power connections for the fan are good. Then seal you xbox, another note if the fan duct is not in the xbox your fan will revv up and sound unpleasant, so keep it in there like you should.

Better than I thought.
I purchased a used phat 360 that came with six games for $130, not a bad deal. However I knew the problems it had, and after the 30 day warranty was up, I installed this fan and some heatsinks. The system stays much cooler, is much more quite than I thought it would be, and I no longer have graphical glitches. The fan is not very bright which I appreciate. I though I would have to disable the LEDs as I am not a fan of them. But the brightness is just right and does not get in the way of playing in the dark. I feel a lot more air coming out the back compared to the original fan. One thing I noticed is the air feels much cooler to the touch as well. I believe this is due to less heat buildup in the case before it is expelled. It is a little lose in my case as it is not as tall as the original. But I am sure it will not go anywhere,

New fans suck! (in a good way)
These fans are nice, You probably should buy a 360 tool kit to install these as to not mess up your case. If you have the kit, it installs in about 10 minutes. easy easy easy. There was no directions with this thats how easy it is. The lights looks cool, it sounds very different- my old fans would spin at max speed and sounded like a vacuum cleaner, with these I can play the most graphically demanding games (Crysis 2 and Black Ops) and its still really quiet compared to before. I have to ad that only one of my fans spun prior to installing the new ones, so my xbox was exceptionally louder than a normal xbox, which could be why I am so impressed with these compared to the other reviews. But good stuff, especially if you need the upgrade.
