How do i know which rosin to get? Im new at playing the volin.

Hi, I have a degree is the viola and play professionally in two symphonies. A lot of it which rosin you get will depend on your personal preference, which you’ll develop over time. Do you prefer a rosin with more grip? Dark versus light? Etc. While price does certainly have a relationship to quality, I’ve found it is not necessary to spend $20 on a cake of rosin if you find one that you like and works well with your instrument. That all said, generally dark amber rosin works well for most beginners. You would be fine with this rosin.

Whats the difference between dark rosin and light rosin?

Dark rosin is stickier and softer. Light rosin is harder and less sticky. They also make a difference in how the instrument will sound.

Is it better dark or light rosin?

There is no better as it is up to personal preference. Typically, violins use light rosin while something deeper like cellos use dark rosin. Dark rosin is stickier than light rosin so it gives a meatier tone while requiring more strength to use. Sometimes a lighter tone is desired—in that case use light rosin.

I live in east Tennessee, so which type of rosen should i use dark or light?

This has more to do with the type of instrument you are playing. Most people prefer the lighter rosin with violin, darker with cello. Viola tends to go either way in my experience.
