What is the best size of pens to use with this?

My wife gets packs of an array of colored pens from different local stores that she uses for her spirograph. She also uses the same pens for adult type coloring books. I think that nearly any size pen will work. Hope that helps.

What is the largest "inside" (inches) design that can be made?

Hello,After using the putty to set the ring in place, you may choose a wheel for the design. If selecting the small wheel to use inside the ring, the shapes are about 2 1/2" in diameter. If selecting a larger wheel to use outside the ring, the shapes can be as large as 7" in diameter.

What type of colored pens work best with this diecast set?

You cannot use jel pens. They smear. No felt tip. The good old fashion pens work best for me,
