Exemplary Go-Bag Weapon
If this is the type blade you're looking for, then this is the crém-de-la-crém of viable options in a working model! I'm not really a personal fan of a double edged design (sword was a gift), but the Combat Commander feels just right in the hand by weight, size and heft. Very nimble little piece for slashing and back-slashing, but especially stabbing there with! In third part comparison to the military grade SOG "Fusion" Tomahawk which compares well to the M48 Tactical Tomahawk, the brother of this very sword, I would say it's essentially built to the very same standards - this sucker is solid! If you ever thought getting one of these new age 'hawks in your hand felt good, wait until you pick-up a Combat Commander! It should also be noted, as everyone wants to know how it compares to the Cold Steel alternative, this sword is a few inches shorter, but given the machete metal used in the CS model, that's really preferential. The thickness seems a little better with minimal noteworthy bend, comparably. Also, the deeper grind is comforting and it comes razor sharp, like "...dang" Any potential misgiving are more akin to oddities than real problems, so to speak. The lanyard hole is certainly in a curious location, but I'd hesitate to call it "awkward" after looping a dogtag chain through it and testing said lanyard-equivalent through middle and ring fingers, it takes all of 5-seconds to re-acclimate to. On the other hand, the fastening strap can be, and I stress, EASILY sliced off by careless un-sheathing, I really should have known better... To those on the fence, the price is good, so just go for it. If it still doesn't float your boat, lash it to a back-up bug-out bag for your buddy's brother ;-). They'll praise you @ Go Time for arming them so w/ such a BA piece of generic kit, seriously! I mean, the Combat Commander can hardly claim the title of "specialty item" but it looks/feels like exactly what you need in the closet for a grid down type scenario for those who never took the time to lean their own preferences, aka the valuable bro who finally says "You were right all along, now give me a weapon!"

Buy it, Try it, Love it!
I purchased this gladius copy for two resaons: price and length of the blade. I own the Cold Steel Gladius machete and found it to be a well made tool and though this one, based on the number of good reviews, would be a good companion piece. The price was about $10 less then the CS version so I thought I would take a chance. When it came, I was taken aback by the box, which did little to protect it. However, the handle and blade were wrapped in plastic to keep moisture from it, a nice touch. It came in it's sheath (more on that later). After wiping the blade down with some CLP lubricant and honing the factory edges a bit, I compared it to the CS machete side by side. The CS blade is about 2" longer and the blade was a tad bit thicker. Also, the handle material of the CS blade, while very tough, is a bit slippery. Then it was time for the 20 oz. water bottle test. One quick swing cleaved the bottle in twain, leaving the bottom half sitting .5 inches (yes, I measured) from where I had set it! In other words, it's a definite cutting blade! The United gladius has a rubberized handle that is very comfortable in the hand and has plenty of room for any hand size. It has better balance then the CS gladius, which is a lot more point heavy when you hold the two next to each other. The United blade is quick in the hand, has a very nice wasp waist blade with a nicely tapered point that penetrates deep. The sheath isn't bad but it isn't great, either. It does have a large loop to fit any width of belt and seems to be a little better constructed and designed then my CS one. For now, it will do the job until I can fashion a leather, wood or a Kydex version. I am impressed with how United Cutlery has stepped up the quality of their product line and this Combat Commander Gladius is not exception. For the price, I am very happy with it.

Nice ,sharp short sword,great value!
This is a very nicely done inexpensive short sword ,arrived sharp and very nice for 1 handed swinging, only issue I have and it's big ,it has a hot spot when I swing it on the bottom of my hand ,it appears after just a few swings so I'll have to modify it a bit hopefully, otherwise it's an awesome sword you can actually use

Excellent Quality!!!!
I purchased this sword after reading reviews for both United Cutlery and Cold Steel's "gladius" swords. First off, this sword is not in the style of the traditional Roman gladius. The blade has a nore leaf-shaped profile, making it closer to the Greek Xiphos (though this is much, much shorter) Anyways, Cold Steel's sword is nearly exaclty as to how the Roman gladius is, with a straight short blade. However, I am glad that I purchased this one, though the blade IS stainless steel (SS), it is very strong. The blade is a little thicker than a machete blade, but again, is very tough. The handle is a hard rubber but still comfortable and for those asking, the "sword" is full tang, meaning the metal of the blade extends all the way through the handle to the pommel. There is a glassbreaker on the end which is a really neat addition. The blade does come sharp, but not enough to pass the paper test (though you could sharpen it more if you want, I will). Finally, the shealth is better quality than I thought, as I expected it was nylon but unlike I expected was lined with thin plastic and reinforced at the tip. It has a snap to secure the sword in and a loop to hitch it to the belt. All in all, the United Cutlery "Combat Gladiator" sword is most definitely worth the $30 and is extremely good quality for the price. It arrived within two days of my purchase in the United Cutlery box which was in the Amazon box, the sword itself wrapped separately and secured ib the shealth- also wrapped- in the box.

Good modern weapon blade. Inexpensive But Great Design
This sword handles fast and cuts good. I cut up some jugs, and hard fruit and it just sliced through with no effort. The Point of Balance is 2.5" from the guard so the sword feels super fast, but there is still enough weight to cut. To test the heat treatment of the blade, I stabbed into wood a couple of times and pulled out, nothing broke. I also chopped into wood and the blade wasn't damaged. So it seems that I got a good sword with good heat treatment. The blade came sharp enough out of the box but I ran it over a strop with sharpening compound for 15 minutes and this improved the sharpness significantly. The materials on the sword and sheath are inexpensive... But the designers used what they got with the price point and designed a great WEAPON. Just don't try to use this thing like a prybar or chop wood... The thin blade isn't designed for that.

Seems to be good quality
Exactly what we ordered. Seems to be good quality. Proof will come as we utilize it for camping. It might be a little heavy for backpacking, we shall see.

Looks nice but not a very thick blade
Looks nice but the blade thickness is a little thin for me, but it's sharp.

Outstanding!
Outstanding! It is extremely light; very easy to wield and chop; stab and slice! The handle is comfortable. The steel is a very durable steel. The size is versatile enough for many uses!
