I made a copy for myself and gave the 2nd original to my youngest as a birthday present when he turned 29. My first introduction to this CD was from a walk by in front of a shop on Pacific Garden Mall in Santa Cruz some ten years ago. It called to me. I bought a copy. No accident. These songs never cease to move me as a dad when I put them on the boom box while doing guy stuff in the garage. As a son, too, I am moved. And,as a brother. God knows I could do better at each. The words and tunes here take me back to images I breathed in during a favorite guy movies, like--Rob Roy--and times when women, as wonderful as they be, are clueless to the mystery of masculine relationships. Absolutely Magnificent Scottish Music & Musical Storytelling
A fantastic & hauntingly beautiful tribute to Scottish Island & Highlands using traditional musical instruments. Many of MacDonald’s songs are filled with ancestral stories. One of my favorite CD’s. I own two copies, one for a backup to always enjoy. Recommend it highly.

A bit of Scotland's best!9
Since we lived in Scotland for over a year, I can attest to the fact that this CD reflects the best of the pipes and drums, along with the singing!!! Everytime someone hears my CD, they want it!!

thrills and happiness
The album calls to my blood and heritage like not many do. Mr. McDonald's voice crawls into the mind and brings forth images of warriors defending their homeland. Terrific album to listen.

True Scottish Sound!
I came upon this cd by accident, but what a fortunate accident that has turned out to be! The pipes, the drums, and the strings carry one back to the Highlands! Several of these songsI learned in high school chorus in Missouri, but Steve McDonald gives them a new exciting life. It is a lengthy cd, with 16 tracks and more than an hour of ballads. It was a great purchase, and fulfilled with the characteristic Amazon efficiency.

Steve McDonald loves the history and culture of Scotland. The album is a musical celebration of the country. Delightful melodies. Evocative. I can definitely recommend this to those who enjoy folk music. McDonald's singing voice is remarkably rich and ideal for this kind of music.

Die CD ist einfach klasse, ich höre sie sehr oft. Der Titel bezieht sich auf die frühe Besiedlung Schottlands durch Somerled, einem Wikingerfürsten und seine Nachkommenschaft. Er war wohl der Eroberer der westlichen Inseln, wie im Beiheft im Text steht. Dazu lese ich gerade parallel das Buch von Michael Phillips "Der Stein der Kelten + Schwert und Krone", 2. Teil der Saga. Dieser schildert u.a. die Schlacht von Robert the Bruce, dem 1. König der Schotten, gegen König Edward II von England um Stirling Castle. Eine schöne Ergänzung fürs Gehör ist diese CD! Man spürt förmlich den Geist Schottlands und seiner kernigen Bevölkerung... Der 1. Titel Introduction stimmt mit Dudelsack-Klängen auf die folgenden ein Der 2. geht richtig los mit Trommeln, die u.a. die kriegerische Vergangenheit erinnern. Der 3. Titel : Live on my warrior son - ein Gänsehautsong, der mir sehr gefällt. Klasse! Live on beloved one 4. All you know - mit Dudelsack, Trommeln und anderen Instrumenten stimmen nachdenkliche Töne an, auch ein klarer Gänsehautsong, begleitet von einem Chor, einfach wunderschön Steve's klare Stimme - mein nächster Favorit 5. kennt jeder, der Runrig mag: Loch Lomond 6. Soldier's Lament - fast schon ein Popsong zum Mitsingen, getragene Klänge voller Gefühl, doch nachdenklicher Text (we were born to live again) 7.Come to the Isle of Skye - nix wie hin, weg von den Menschenmassen und Blechlawinen, ein Lockruf des Nordens 8.Scotland the brave - kennt man von den jährlichen Military Tattoos im NDR3, wird von allen Schotten-Bands gern gespielt; dazu eine schöne Harfenuntermalung mit treibender Trommelbegleitung im Marschtempo 9./10:Celtic Segue/Celtic Warrior - mein Favorit: es werden im Text die Namen aller wichtigen Schlachten Schottlands ./. England aufgezählt, ein klarer Gänsehaut-Song, finde ich; man kriegt das Gruseln, wieviel Blutzoll dort geflossen sein muß, von Stirling Bridge bis Culloden, wo das Ende Schottlands besiegelt wurde (schade, finde ich); der Song läßt die düstere Stimmung kurz vor der jew. Schlacht entstehen beim Hören - man hört die Marschgeräusche förmlich heraus (bin hin und weg bei dem Titel); kurz: ein Song voller Kraft, mächtigen Trommeln und dem Gefühl für Weite und Freiheit 11.I will return - das Versprechen, wiederzukommen - was für eine Botschaft! er setzt Nr.9-10 fort, sehr emotional, wieder mal Gänsehautfeeling pur (our love will live on) 12.Wild mountain thyme: ein Traditional, das auch schon auf der CD Celtic Crossing von Bruce Guthro steht, einfach nur schön für Lagerfeuerstimmungen 13.per mare per terras - ähnlich wie Nr. 4; die Besiedlung der Inseln als Thema; paßt zum Titel der ganzen CD, kraftvolle Trommeln treiben den Rhythmus voran; Steve's Stimme macht mich süchtig! (Scotland calls) 14.Lordship of the isles: bezieht sich wieder auf die Besiedlung der 1. Wikinger und vor allem auf Somerled, dem Mitbegründer des mächtigen McDonald Clans (nachlesen im Buch Stein der Kelten!). Ob Rory McDonald / Runrig auch von dem abstammt? :-) Klare Harfenbegleitung, sanft untermalt (Over the ages and over the sea) von einem mehrstimmigen Chor - klasse! 15.Journey of the warrior soul: ein düsterer Ausklang mit hoffnungsvoller Harfe, ohne Gesang, rein instrumental - Gänsehaut-Titel..... Es lohnt sich jedenfalls, auch das Booklet mal genau zu lesen - klare Punktzahl von mir. Diese Stimme hat was Echtes zu erzählen und kein Blabla - mein Herz gehört Schottland!

Bin durch Zufall auf diese Musik gestoßen, über das Celtic Radio - ein Internetradiosender. Und ich bin hin und weg. Wunderbare Musik mit schottischen Geschichten, so richtig schön zum Träumen.
