I wouldn't use it as an initial piercing since it swells up. I do wear it daily now and don't remove it.

Does the front gem part unscrew as well?

No it is just the solid ball that unscrews from the post.

Can these be used on lobes too or are they just for cartilage?

These can be used on the the lobe part, the material of the earring is good to be used anywhere on your ear

Can kids wear these, or are they guaged?

Kids can wear them but I'll warn you - the backs are screw on and they're soooo tiny! You may be able to screw them on for your child depending on the size of their lobes.
