after spraying on firm fruits or veg (such as citrus or bell peppers, for example) just rub for 15-30 seconds then rinse thoroughly. For items that cannot be rubbed (like berries or Brussels sprouts) you can spray and let sit for several seconds before rinsing. Alternately, add some of the product to a bowl of water and soak produce for 30 seconds to a minute before rinsing. I have frequently gotten distracted and soaked things for several minutes without any damage/residual taste - just rinse very well!
