Fantastic introduction
I would say if you have played through GH already you probably know way more than me about the game, bet you already have this JotL version, and can skip this review. If you haven't picked this up after playing GH, I can see this fulfilling the itch for more diversified game play while awaiting Winterhavens release. I've played Gloomhaven a little before pre-COVID. Picked up this to scratch the itch as a solo attempt and so glad I did. It comes with a lot of material. I mean a lot. Set up is way easier than the standard game due to the book format of the rooms rather than tiles. The lack of tiles doesn't take away from anything. This allows you a little more freedom to experience the game and see if you're in for the long haul. The crawl, walk, run approach I'd much appreciated. It helps establish rules (and good habits) before breaking loose. The format this is presented in easy to reference, I found. After playing the standard GH 1st adventure where it took us about 4-5 hours for 3 of us to finish the first scenario while learning the rules. this ease a much easier bite to chew. If I/we had picked up this starter version and played through, solo or with otherwise, we would be ready to hit the ground running in playing the standard GH game and forsee playing that aame 1st GH in much less time aside from the additional set it would require. Note: there is a great app you to play this a bit easier as well that tracks tokens and also allows you to play from afar with others. Maybe worth checking out if it works for you oyour group so YMMV. You get a lot out of this game the added characters ensure it stays relevant and worth the time and money investment when you move in to the standard GH.

Wonderful game!
This is one of the highest ranked games on BoardGameGeek.com. The game is a slightly simplified version of the full Gloomhaven game. It does a great job simplifying the game in multiple ways. 1. You play on the actual book, instead of putting together cardboard map pieces. Also the book includes objects identified on certain spaces. This saves an incredible amount of setup time. It takes so long in the original game to set up all the map pieces, the doors, the rocks, the water hexes, etc. This eliminates all that! 2. It actually teaches you how to play the game while you are playing it. You start off with simplified versions of the cards. As you play through the scenarios, you replace the simplified cards in your hand with the actual cards that you will continue with throughout the rest of the game. It is so easy to play through AND learn the game as you are doing it. There are quite a few learning scenarios included. By the time you are through those scenarios, you are ready to play the actual game. This is a MUST for any person interested in D&D or other rpgs. You get to create and level a character, gaining experience and new abilities, acquiring new items and developing strategies to get you and your party through the scenarios. There is normally no permanent death (unless you choose to play that way) - your character just gets "knocked out". An incredible amount of fun! Easily worth the price!

One of the best games I've ever played
This is a complete adventure that will keep you busy for a while. Gameplay: It's basically playing an RPG video game but somehow this one manages to immerse you into this fantasy world that you will not even noticed that 3 hours have just passed. You can also buy from Forteller games the fully narrated scenarios which adds an additional level of immersion, I really recommned it. The first scenario took me 3 hours to complete (including setup) since the rules will guide you step by step on what you need to do and there is a lot to read but they introduce a few mechanics at a time so that you get a good grip of the game first. There is a map that you can use to keep track of the game scenario that you are playing and also you can "save" your game by keeping the cards corresponding to the character in a separate bag. There are items in the box that are sealed and can't be opened until you reach certain event in the story which I consider really exciting. Components: All components are of high quality. The miniatures are extremely high detail. The scenarios are beautifully designed. Pros: + Great Story + Rules are extremely well done, the rule book will guide you step by step without feeling overwhelmed + Companion app "Forteller games" which narrates the scenarios with great detail (sold separatedly but completely worth it) + Attention to detail on every corner, on the miniatures, drawings, character and enemy designs, scenarios, etc. + Mystery items that are sealed and can't be revealed until reaching an event in the story. Cons: - Takes around 20 mins to set up - Each playthrough will take easily from 1 - 2 hours for 2 players. - (Not fully a 1 player game) For a solo game, you manage 2 characters which adds to difficulty of managing things. - The stickers can't be removed from the map (removable stickers sold separatedly)

Seriously, just get it
If you are on the fence thinking that it will be too complicated and overwhelming, it’s not, just get it. This is the perfect way to introduce a new player to Gloomhaven. The tutorial missions are very well narrated and explained and the game mechanics are engaging and fun for the whole group of adventures. The amount of content is very hefty, but not as overwhelming as the larger game; about a quarter of the scenarios. Within two scenarios I can already tell I want the larger game. My kids knew they liked it after the first scenario and were naming their characters and looking forward to seeing them grow and develop. It’s basically a RPG video game in a box. Pick your favorite character and you and your friends or family will embark on an epic campaign in which you don’t finish the game each time you finish a scenario. Your character will level up, get stronger, earn rewards, and unlock new abilities and game features as the story progresses. Each scenario leads into the next so the game feels continuous rather than just a bunch of independent missions. Each game session seams to play out in an hour to an hour and a half which I think is rather good. If you like adventure dungeon crawling with a D&D like flair, but don’t like heavy dice rolling and checking against multiple tables to see how things resolve, then this game is for you. Your family or gaming group will not regret it and will eagerly look forward to each successive game night as you dive deeper and deeper into the murky streets and dark alleyways of the city of Gloomhaven, seeking gold, glory, and the right to brag at the local inn. Good luck, and happy gaming.

A great game
This is a really fun game for those wanting an easier into into a TTRPG style combat and fun group play mechanics. A huge game put into a compact box that looks, feels, and plays similar to it's bigger cousin known as the full Gloomhaven. This high quality product is an easy steal for countless nights of progressing fun with friends.

Great Introduction to Gloomhaven! NOT HARD TO LEARN!
Man, what can I say that hasn’t been said already. This game ROCKS! Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is a cooperative RPG table top game that is very “gamey”... in the sense that it feels like a video game but on the table. If you’ve played turn based strategy video games such as Divinity Orginal Sin 2 or XCOM you’ll probably pick this game up very fast. With that being said, it’s not a very complicated game to start of with. The games has tutorial scenarios that you start on the slowly introduce mechanics to the player so that you’re not overwhelmed when you first start! But trust me that rule book will be your best friend for a while. I’ve played this game solo (10 hours playtime) and it’s very fun and playable that way, however the pacing can definitely drag at the start because you’re looking at 2 different hands and learning how to play the characters as well. However, I’ve recently started playing with a couple of friends (8 hours) and thats helped a ton with speeding up the game sessions and obviously has made it more enjoyable as a whole. All in all this game is a 10/10 for me, I do wish that there some more things to do instead of just fight in scenarios and do random city events, but the core gameplay is very solid and the game can screw you over plenty, but it’s so rewarding when you can overcome that and clear the scenario by the skin of your teeth! Just go ahead and buy it already!

Started with this expansion, kinda dark, fun game.
I’ve never played Gloomhaven OG before. I was weary of starting on an expansion of a game and almost sent this back without review. Well, turned out to be a great place to start. I was very weary but now think this may be the ideal kicking off point for new players, if this is the sort of thing they are into. The first 5 scenarios teach you how to play and gradually introduce the rules. It makes learning everything much easier and funner than other long games that require you to read a book first and memorize everything before game play. Still takes at least an hour to get through the first scenario. The box also opens to a page that tells you exactly how to open and organize the contents, which is great because this game has a lot and even this much slimmed down version might be intimidating to new owners. The scenario maps come in a spiral book you can lay out, removing the need for tiles and saving a lot of time. And although this is 14+ (and has options to play solo) I was able to guide my 13 year old & spouse through playing with me even though no D&D Adventure System games were ever introduced to them before. My family loved the map with the stickers, buying items, and the story. If, like me, you’ve been eyeing up Gloomhaven for some time, but were a little scared to make the leap, this is the place to start. I think veteran players will also enjoy the new characters and content, but this truly shines as a better entry point to a complex game. One note I must make is there is a clear evil in many of the characters specifically the monsters. Blood, demons, dark spirits, and many more dark figures cannot be avoided. If that doesn't sound like what you want to spend a couple hours looking at, let alone fighting then this is not your game. I would not recommend this game for young or immature children, hence the 14+.

A light weight campaign adventure!
Really fun and easy to play if you are into campaign style games. Also fun as a solo game. I like that the footprint is relatively small and can be played in smaller space.

Not for me
Different folks different strokes I guess. I preferred Bloodborne the board game in terms of fighting with decks.
