The Umbrella

I find wordless books hit or miss. maybe I am not creative enough but some books are too abstract to easily come up with something that keeps my daughter (3.5) following along. This book was easy to play with and create a storyline. The illustrations are fantastic and the expressiveness of the dog are enrapturing. My daughter seemed like she was on the edge of her seat, not to mention thrilled by the many visions of his flight in air. Lovely, lovely book.

This book is amazing. The illustrations are phenomenal. I am so looking forward to sharing it and hearing what the children have to say about it.

My children (age 3 and 1) love this beautifully illustrated book. Every time we read it, we tell a new story (since there are no words) and the kids love that we can change it up every time.

This is a beautifully illustrated wordless book. The story is told through the pictures of the little dog's adventure throughout one day of being swept up into the air while holding onto an umbrella. Beautiful landscapes with jungle, sky, ocean, and many animals and birds. I was disappointed that the distant people in the huts were apparently throwing spears at the dog as he flew high above, but I just ignore that as I read it to my three year old grandson (why on earth does an author add that sort of thing?!).

Such a beautiful book with an interesting story.

My family and I love this book. You make your own story and the illustrations are beautiful. Lots of fun.

This is such a beautiful book--I bought it as a present for a child, but the kid is going to have to wrest it out of my hands. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Love anything Cairn Terrier related! A bit pricey as out of print book but had to purchase anyway!!

文字は一切ないので、英語がわからなくても、文字の読めない小さなお子さんでもオッケー！ とにかく見開きごとの絵が素晴らしくて、ぐいぐい引き込まれます。 物語はもう、表紙の裏側、見返しページから始まります。強風の吹き荒れる日、真っ赤な傘を見つけた子犬。子猫に見送られたまま大空に吹き上げられて・・・。飛ばされた先は雲の上、アフリカの大草原、カラフルな海の中、シロクマのいる北極・・・・。ワニに取り囲まれたり、アマゾン原住民に槍を投げつけらたりハラハラもします。赤い傘はパラシュートになったり、ソリになったり、船になったり、まあ次々に展開する冒険の素晴らしいこと。次はどこに飛ばされるの？？と、子供と想像しあって、ドキドキしながらページをめくります。 最後は子猫のいる元の場所に戻ってきて、次は子猫の冒険を予感させて、ワクワクのまま終了。見事です。

We got so much from this book. My class wrote words to go with the story then, explored places around the world then wrote their own version of the story imagining what adventures the hat would get up to. Fantastic book with so many opportunities.
