I really enjoyed watching this film. I am a fan of good western films and this selection from Criterion did not disappoint. Sydney Poiter and Harry Belafonte did a great job working together in this film. My only critique is that the ending could have been better. The film starts out strong and continues to build up during the middle of the film; then toward the end it abruptly ends with somewhat of an anticlimactic final shootout. This is one of those films that for some reason I enjoyed watching the beginning more than the end. I still am giving it 4 stars due to the story line and the acting. The transfer and audio were fantastic, and the film looks great. Colors are very vibrant and crisp for a film that was made in the 1970's. All in all; a fantastic addition to the collection. If you are a fan of westerns or action movies in general, you should definitely check this one out!

Great western directed by Sidney Poitier. Ruby Dee and Harry Belafonte are great in this movie. Great and educational, because life was really like this back in those days.

Sydney Poitier, Harry Belafonte and Ruby Dee -- a triumvirate of African-American stars usher up a true-to-life story of post- Civil-War freed slaves trying to head West to make a new life for themselves. The wagon train, guided by former Buffalo Soldier, Buck, is pursued by white Southerners who want to force the people to return to work in the fields of Louisiana. A bi-racial con man, however, has joined the train for his own selfish purposes. When the whites catch up with the wagon train, they rape, murder and pillage and leave the survivors alone and vulnerable in Comanche territory. It is up to Buck, the con man with his very unusual Bible, and Buck's wife to find a way to salvage losses and try to get the people to the land their elderly "seer" has promised lies ahead for them. This movie shows a part of American history that has rarely, if ever, been taught or even spoken of--freed slaves being a part of the settlement of the West. They were not only persecuted in the South, but the color of their skin made them subject to hostility wherever they went. I have seen this movie multiple times, shown it to my classroom students, and generally tried to have it viewed as much and as often as possible. Its story is a very necessary element of education for all Americans. Poitier, Belafonte and Dee perform with expected excellence in this edge-of-your-seat, nail biter.

Great story + good acting... makes a good movie, and at times funny

Voilà un western des années 70 que j'ai découvert et que j'ai apprécié pour l'interprétation de ce sympathique duo d'acteurs et l'originalité de son scénario. Sidney POITIER et Harry BELAFONTE sont deux personnes remarquables du cinéma américain que j'ai eu plaisir à suivre dans cette aventure aux multiples rebondissements. Un western surprenant et anticonformiste, où l'on sent bien la patte de ces deux acteurs engagés à défendre des valeurs universelles au cinéma comme dans la vraie vie.

Great movie

Sidney Poitier & Harry Belafonte were very good in this movie.

Film un peu particulier (pas forcément top), mais sur un sujet pratiquement jamais traité, et qui devait l'être. La vie (survie), des noirs en Amérique et leur tentative d'exister. Leur "liberté", après la guerre Nord/Sud. Un Harry Belafonte à la bouche "gâtée". (A cause de cela, on peine à le reconnaître). Images rares de cette bouche dégoûtante, mais bien dans l'idée de l'horreur de la "race inférieure" dans un pays où, même des années après (voir "les visiteurs" avec Reno/Clavier), cette idée de "dents pourries" n'est pas passée. Elle stigmatise le "sale", ce qui ne peut être...Surtout qu'ils n'y sont pas allés avec le dos de la cuillère, question hygiène dentaire...Beurk !
