how hard is the head does it mark easily?

These are nice hammers and heavy heads so they mark easily. I use them alot. The big one I use for many other purposes as well. Highly recommend them.

Would these be any good for metal forging?

It's small and very well made short handle so not much welt I think it's not for you unless the jobs are small
