I am told the disc is worthless without the Max Hardware which my PS2 is asking for. Is there something else I need to buy?

Not sure. My armax didn't come with a mc or usb, just the disc. Works great, just have to find a USB that armax recognizes.Another thing, be careful with armax with non- Sony mc's.
