Tiny box, big fun!

This is a review of the 2nd edition of this game, which was released in the fall of 2014. It contains the base game as well as additional cards for 7 expansions. It also includes an incubus figurine which adds some minor mechanics to the base game which technically would make it an 8th expansion.First, opening up this game is a small thrill in and of itself. After you remove the top of the box, you are greeted by a nightmare who unfolds for you to reveal the two rulebooks (base game & expansions) which are themselves intertwined together. My description doesn't do it full justice. To see the quality of the components, I recommend going on youtube and watching "Onirim 2nd edition unboxing" by cardboard castaway. The game insert is of a soft velvet-like substance. The figurine reminds me of the same quality as the pieces in the game Hive, and yes, as stated in the video, it is cold to the touch which fits the theme well. The artwork on the cards is surreal but beautiful in an eerie sort of way, again fitting for the theme. I was impressed with the quality that was put into this. Impressive for a little card game.Whenever I get a new game, I always play a few rounds of it myself to get a feel for the rules before I unleash it on my poor unsuspecting non-hardcore-gamer wife. This game was a joy to test drive. It is a solitaire game (but has a two-player cooperative variant). Gameplay is smooth and quick. I would like to make one clarification that was not made clear in the rules. "Discard" and "limbo" are two different piles. Aside from that it is not difficult to learn. After you get your hand, you essentially "draw a card/play a card" in an effort to build sets (location cards) to acquire the cards you need (door cards) to win. In addition, there are "key" cards that will open the "doors" quickly for you, and there are "dream cards (nightmares)" that punish you. It actually plays more fun than the description I just gave. If you would like to see a game played out, on youtube look up "Onirim the card game: play through" by Solo McLaughlin. That is the base game. I won't go over all the rule variants for the expansions but, again, if you go on youtube and look up "Onirim overview - spiel 2014" by boardgamegeek tv, the actual designer of the game briefly goes over all the games.Okay, my thoughts? My non-gamer wife is my primary play partner so I'm always on the lookout for light-to-medium games, that play in under an hour, that work well with just 2 people. This is a light card game, solitaire or 2 persons, plays in a half hour, and is fun to play. Score!

Stuck in a dream and can't escape? Solo gaming at its finest!

Excellent product and game.Box and contents very well designed from the physical way it all fits together to the instructions on how to play. Easy to store the cards and rule books (base game and expansion) back again. And the box itself is quite small so doesn't take up much room at all.The game is fun, simple enough to learn yet complex enough (with added expansions, which are included in the box) to keep you going. Great for solo play. Does include 2 player option which I am yet to try.You can tell that the designers have given a lot of thought to all the details. From the overall difficulty of the game and it's expansions to the way some cards have an extra use say on drawing cards based on a number at the bottom - the info is there but it doesn't get in the way so to speak, it's skillfuly done. Even the discard pile has its uses in some expansions. The art style is quite distinct and personally I like it very much. However I can see some people not enjoying the Omniverse (the 'world' in which the game is set) style. The setting of this game is enough to explain what's happening and then you use your imagination for the rest. Another way to put it is that you could have the same game with just matching cards with symbols and colours but it would lose a lot of the feel for it.The game itself is challenging and I often have a close game. Most games take about 10-20 minutes depending how much you plan your turns. As all 7 expansions are compatible and interchangeable there are many combinations to play - they have various degrees of difficulty too. So you'd be able to find a good balance at what you like.Final thoughts:Really well designed fun card game with lots of variation to keep you going. Highly recommend.

You’ll Never Play Solitaire Again

I’ve been playing the mobile edition of ONIRIM ever since it was originally released. I needed a good solitaire game that was just Klondike Solitaire, and this seemed like it would fit the bill. Fast forward to now: ONIRIM is, hands down, one of my favorite games period. So I knew I needed the physical game, too.The package offered here on Amazon is a great value for any gamer: one small box attractively packed with not just the base card game, but all the necessary cards for utilizing up to 7 expansions to the game. While the box handles storing the cards, Little Incubus pan, and rules books perfectly fine, I’d have appreciated some envelopes and/or smaller boxes to house each expansion within the main box. If I only want to try one or two specific expansions, it is a bit of a drag to have to rifle through a massive stack of cards to figure out where, in that deck, the ones I need have been put away.Fortunately, the tray is the right size to be able to keep the base deck separated from all the expansions, so popping the box open for a quick round is as easy as it could be. I’ve yet to try to 2-player variants, but as a solo experience I cannot recommend the game enough. The cards are beautiful to feel & look at, the mechanics are easy to grasp, and the strategy just hard enough to make every game feel different from the last.My 4-stars are more a reflection of my shopping/delivery experience. The game is great, however the vendor who was previously selling the game through Amazon slacked off a bit on the shipping end. My package delivery was delayed, and during the delay I had no way to track it to see where it was on its route. It did arrive the next day (dropped off at the wrong door), but this was not my usual smooth Amazon shopping experience.

Bestes Einzelspiel!

Beautiful, engaging solo card game.

Onirim is a solitaire style card game that can be played by one or two people. I find that it's most enjoyably played solo, because the cooperative rules make the game more clunky and create frustration between the players. The base game is a lot of fun, and although it is straightforward to understand, I was still having fun playing it after a few dozen games because of the complexities of the strategy required to beat it. The quality of everything in the box excellent, and I highly recommend purchasing it.The idea of the game is that you are a dreamer lost in a labyrinth, and you must explore your way around the dreamscape to escape. You need to travel through the games' four dreams: the observatory (red), the gardens (green), the aquarium (blue), and the library (brown) in order to discover and unlock the doors which will lead to your escape, and all the while avoid nightmares that will arrest your progress. I really like the theme of the game, and the fantastic artwork immerses me in the experience.Gameplay-wise, you need to play three location cards with matching colours (and alternating symbols: sun, moon, and key) in a row to put a corresponding door card on the table. You can also use the powerful key cards in various ways to help unlock doors. Once you have all eight door cards in front of you, two each of the four locations, you win the game. This is easier said than done, however, as there are also nightmare cards in the deck that, when drawn, force you to make a choice of how to discard location or door cards. If you run out of cards in your deck before you can acquire all the doors, you lose. It's engaging because there are a lot of points in the game when you need to make a calculated decision about how to proceed based on risk versus reward. Say you have two red location cards down on the table, but none in your hand. You do, however, have three blue cards and two brown cards in your hand. Do you discard cards from your hand in order to fish for a red card that will let you finish your set, wasting precious location cards and potentially running into a nightmare while doing so? Or, do you go for a guaranteed set of three blues, which also guarantees you waste the two red cards you already have on the table? There's a decent amount of space for skill expression here, because knowing how many cards of each colour are in the deck or have already been discarded will help you come to the optimal decision. When base Onirim does start to feel repetitive, this version of the game comes with seven expansions. Usually, an expansion makes the game simultaneously easier and more difficult by adding an extra objective that must be completed (or a hazard to overcome), but including some bonus cards or plays to help you get there. I don't have much experience with the expansions, but the rulebook says that each expansion can stand on its own or be combined with any number of others, which is nice.My two complaints about the game are: cooperative play requires that you and your partner share cards in an awkward way which causes frustration and makes the game way less fun, and that there is a lot of shuffling in this game. Like, a lot. And the deck starts off at 76 cards, only increasing as you add expansions. Repeatedly shuffling a whole heap of cards, sometimes 2-3 times during a single turn, gets a little annoying.I highly recommend Onirim if you are looking for a card game to play by yourself that has a great aesthetic and makes you feel smart when you beat it. If you aren't sure that you'd like it, the base game is available for free digitally on Steam as "Onirim - Solitaire Card Game," so you can try it out there first. The quality of the box, cards, rulebooks, and token is excellent, however, and there's just something nice about owning a physical copy, in my opinion. If your tastes are like mine, I'm sure you'd enjoy it.
