BUNKER INDUST Trailer Brake Breakaway Kit with Charger, LED Display, Switch, 12V 5Ah Battery for Trailer Caravan

I added electric brakes to my 3500# trailer just for more comfort towing a SxS through the hills. I saw a review or 2 saying the battery isn’t replaceable on this thing. That is wrong. It is replaceable. However I believe you have to take the mounting screws off to get it open. And prying it open is a task. There are double sided tape foam pads keeping the battery in the space. So you have to overcome that glue/tape. But it will pop open then it’s a standard 12v breakaway battery like all the other ones. It functions perfect. I made sure to pull the pin and test that it applies the brakes. It does. I wish it had a coiled cable for the pin. I find I have to coil the cable up slightly and hold it together loosely with a zip tie so it isn’t dragging on the ground. But if the trailer did break away, it would slip through the zip tie then reach cable limit.

Why the double sided tape? Makes the case HARD to get apart w/o tearing it up when it comes time to check/replace the battery.

I have a 2018 utility trailer, dual axle and electric brakes. It had been sitting for a few years, and I decided to rewire it and replace everything just to be on the safe side. Obviously, the battery for the break-away would be the FIRST to be replaced, but why not the entire system? The ORIGINAL breakaway, as well as much of the wiring in general, was, well, not to MY standards!! THIS, BUNKER Breakaway kit fit my needs AND standards!! This kit worked GREAT with the new junction box and round trailer connector replacing the NOT ALL THAT OLD but VERY BRITTLE and questionable wiring and connections! If you're pulling 6500lbs of ANYTHING!! ESPECIALLY with a smaller truck, YOU WANT TO BE SURE IT'S SAFE!!! I feel better with THIS breakaway kit than I did with the kit fitted from the manufacturer!!

Made with good materials, designed well. Easy to install, user friendly. Bought for my cargo trailer brakes and works great. Definitely worth the investment. Long battery life. Recommend purchase.

Info said this was made or from USA, it was made in china, country of origin china! Very misleading! But good luck finding one that isn’t made in china. Some say the box can not be opened, not true. the box is not sealed, so it is not waterproof but has a large double sided 2x4 inch sticky pad that sticks the battery to the box inside making it difficult to get the box cover off (there is 4 screws holding the cover on) to see the battery. I simply stuck a piece of paper to the sticky pad to keep it from being difficult to open next time. You could easily break the electrical connections on the battery or the controller card if you pry it apart from the top of the box, so pry from the bottom where the three wires are coming out. The battery is sealed and unservisable. It should be mounted with the wires/drain hole facing down, sence it could damage/corrode the battery or the controll card inside if they get wet. Also tape the top and 2 sides to keep water from seeping in. Some say this breakaway should come with bolts or screws but it will depend on how or where you install it. Some say it is always reading that it is charging, so it never becomes fully charged. As long as it is plugged into your vehicle it will say that, so just unplug it after driving for a while to check it while disconnected from the vehicle. Protect your wiring with electrical tape especially going thru a metal hole. All things considered this looks to be a well made unit. I’m giving it a three because of the deception of where it was made. Hope that helps some folks out there.
