Solid device, works perfectly for my application
I bought this specifically to hold my iPhone 5S for use as a GPS device while in my work vehicle. The vehicle is a GMC Yukon and is an emergency vehicle, which means I am often driving fast, turning hard, braking quickly, and accelerating quickly. Driving much harder than you probably ever would in your personal vehicle, the mount has been rock solid. Here are the things I've found that have made this device 5 stars for me: 1. It comes in and out of the car quickly. You spin a little knob at the base of the arm to either extend or retract arms in the cup holder base which then hold it very firmly in place. Once in place, it doesn't move, but can be easily taken out of the car in about 10 seconds by just giving a spin the other way. 2. Very easily switches between landscape and portrait, clicking solidly into place for either orientation. Nice for GPS use. 3. It holds the iPhone in place snuggly. Again, I probably drive harder than you do, and I've never been concerned that the iPhone was going to come loose. 4. It's very easy to get the iPhone in and out of the holder, and you can do it easily with one hand. You hit a button just above the arms which hold the phone in place and they open up. To insert the phone, just sit it in the mount and squeeze the arms back together. I typically take the phone out to input the address, put it back in the mount, and then grab it back out when I jump out of the vehicle on the scene. I'm usually trying to move quickly and the mount helps me to do so. Again, this is all done one handed as I typically grab my radio with one hand and the phone with the other. 5. Although I really only care that it works for my iPhone, the arms do extend rather far apart and I can't think of many phones (aside from possibly the Galaxy Note) that wouldn't fit in here just as well. 6. There are two tabs that fold down at the bottom which hold your phone up. They're spaced so that you can connect the charging cable between them. The gap is certainly wide enough for the lightning cable, and also plenty wide for the old 30-pin cable. Only thing I'd say you should keep in mind is that the arm is very stiff. I see this as a plus since I don't want it moving on me once I've got it set. However, while it is adjustable, it's not going to adjust too far from what you see in the picture and it's something you're going to want to adjust once and then keep it there. I spent a while looking through reviews before I settled on this mount for my iPhone. I've found every suction cup mount I've ever tried to be worthless, especially in the cold, so they were out of the question. I also needed something that was easily removable from the vehicle every day but when installed, going to stay put. This fits my needs perfectly and short of a permanent mount, probably the best option you're going to find. So, no need to waste any more time searching...go ahead and buy this!

Usage Experience in a MINI (2005 Cooper, then 2018 Cooper S)
October 24th, 2014: This mount most definitely works in those tiny relatively useless (except for spare keys and plastic cosmetic pieces that have broken off my 10-year-old car :D ) cup holders featured in MINI Coopers. Amazingly, the mount must be expanded to fit those cup holders snugly; the device could easily fit in a smaller cup holders than those in MINIs. My MINI has the automatic CVT transmission; I always use the manual shifting option. Although the gear stick only moves back and forth when shifting compared to the path a manual gear stick takes, I have had no issues bumping the mount while driving. I have nudged the mount a couple of times with my knee while cornering particularly hard, but it bounced right back without moving out of place due to the mild flexibility of the plastic. I positioned the mount so my phone is just beyond the edge of my seat to avoid being in the way of as much as I can; the position allows me to rest my hand on the seat while changing music tracks, too! I can easily reach behind the mount to access the driver's side window toggle switch, but I have admittedly punched my phone on occasion from so many years of having no obstacle in front of the toggle switches. The mount grips my phone (iPhone 6 if you're curious about sizing) on the sides with a ~1.5mm foam pad between the phone and plastic. Not only does the foam protect the phone from the mount, but the give in the foam allows the mount to have a good purchase both with compression and against slippage. The backrest of the mount is glossy plastic; I cannot comment on scratching potential as I use a [Nuvango/Gelaskins hard] case, but I could imagine the possibility of issues for some phone backing materials. Adjusting the grip is very easy with a sawtooth ratchet system. The side grippers get squished together around the phone with my fingers, while a button release just behind the mounted phone will pop the grippers open. A quick press will (quickly) spread them enough to release my phone; the longer I press, the wider they spread. The mount also features flip-out nubs for the bottom of the phone to rest on. (I've included a photo with them flipped out.) Be aware that these do interfere with the audio jack of the iPhone 6 (among others). The side grippers hold my phone just fine without the rest though; I have had no issues using them on their own. Not using the rest also allows me to place the phone lower (or higher if I want) in the grips. This mount is a perfect product for a car with limited non-invasive mounting options; the price compared to other well-reviewed mounts made this purchase a no-brainer. November 16th, 2019: Since my original review, I've changed cars (2018 MINI Cooper S—two generations/remodels younger, but same cup holders), and I've changed phones a few times (iPhones 8 and 11 Pro—same size and slightly larger than the 6, respectively). The holder has continued to hold up and work well with no loss of strength, no weakening joints, and no brittle plastic.

Great for some, bad for others...
I purchased two of these: one for myself and one for my girlfriend. We both have the iPhone 3GS and really wanted some way to keep the phone secure while we are driving. For my car, the cupholders are located right under the temperature control, which is right under the car stereo. What this product has is an adjustable base, which can spread out to fit probably just about any sized cupholder. Unless you would tend to have an extremely small holder, I think this would work out just fine. Upon securing the base I just simply moved the device around until it was facing me and then picked the best "fit" for my iPhone. It was extremely easy to do, and with the way they made this item I think it could fit about any phone on there. Whats really great is that my iPhone has a case, and yet it can easily slip in and out of the "arms" of the holder, and yet it has NEVER fallen out or even shaked in there. It is very secure, and everytime I drive I have used this item. It has no signs of wear, and works great to this day, it even has an opening in the bottom so I can connect my iPhone to my stereo system. Now, if I had just bought one of these for myself, I probably would have rated it 5 stars. The only reason it is at 4 is because the experience my girlfriend had with it. While my cupholder was higher up, her cupholders are located at the space between the two seats (around where a shifter would be, if there was one). This made the placement of the phone awkward, and eventually after twisting it constantly for a few months and elbowing it accidently all the time, the base completely snapped from the neck. Therefore, if you have a setup which is anything like mine, it is highly recommended and is much cheaper than the holders they offer elsewhere. If however, you have a setup such as my girlfriend's, I would suggest maybe looking into windshield mounts.

Finally a holder that works
Installed in my 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 Ever since I got my new Droid Razr Maxx, I have been searching for a holder for it to use in my truck on longer drives. This item fills the bill perfectly. The base can be twisted to expand and contract making it easy to fit just about any cup holder. My phone fits between the arms fine, even in its case which is nice not having to remove that. And the arms, and back panel, are padded so if you happen to not have a case on your phone, then it should not scratch it much, if at all. The upper part rotates allowing you to view your phone in profile or landscape mode. The gooseneck is tight and difficult to position - I admit that I thought I was going to break it at first. But once you give it a little more elbow grease, it will budge and allow you to aim it at the angle that works for you. I especially like the arm release button which makes removing my phone from the arms quick and easy. With my phone installed and the holder installed in one of my center console cup holders, this holder does not bounce, shimmy, shake or move whatsoever while my truck is in motion. A major plus! All in all, a great purchase that I recommend.

Great, after you fix it
This thing works great but..........you have to fix it first. I got it and was hoping it would be the answer for holding my large LG Optimus G Pro and it kinda was. I put it in the cup holder, did not crank it down as it seemed like the base was not the strongest material, and I was right. Without even any snugging, it broke. I was pissed but thought I may be able to fix it. I took it apart and yes, the design is almost correct except for the main part that carries the stress of expanding the sides so it will secure to the cup holder. Anyway, I took some fiber reinforced epoxy and put it around the area in the bottom center washer and put it back together. Then pretty much almost filled the hole in the bottom with the same epoxy. It has been what it should have been from the beginning. you still do not want or need to crank it down when installing but it will now operate as it was designed. Because of the layout of my side buttons, I have to slide it to one side, not centered in the holder, but still works great. If you need to bend the extremely stiff flexible rod, make sure and hold it with both hands, and make small adjustments. Mine works great but like I said, I had to fix it first. Whoever designed this fell victim to the old saying "but it worked on paper". Much preferred over the holders that attach to your vents. They will eventually ruin and break you vents. Too much weight. This has been the best solution so far. Buy it but epoxy it before use..................lol

It's pretty, but...
I got this one because the one I ordered for my husband was so nice. His is a different brand, and we both love it. This one is aesthetically nicer, but there are some issues. Pros: 1. Very sleek and shiny looking compared to the other brand we had. 2. Very smooth open and close function on the side closure. Cons: 1. The main issue is that the tabs on the bottom (which hold the phone in place) are very shallow, and the phone constantly slips out of the cradle if it's not tightly secured by the sides. If you have it tightly secured, you have to loosen it to grab it out of the cradle for a call - hence, it's gonna fall between the seat and console. 2. It doesn't have a very wide range of motion for the head to swivel - it only spins in a 360 - the other brand offers a lot more movement. 3. The neck is way too short, it doesn't rise out of the cup holder far enough, so my gear shift is somewhat blocked. 4. The neck is very hard to move for adjustments. I really would have to skip this for a recommendation, and say go with the brand I got for my husband. As soon as I find that name I'll update this post.

SOLID!
This mount is AWESOME!! I had a few requirements when considering a new mount for my S3. 1) It had to be sturdy. 2) It would hold my phone with or without a case on it. 3) Allow me to easily plug in the charger and headphone cords. 4) SECURELY hold my phone. 5) Be EASY to load and unload my phone (preferable one handed). Based on other reviews, this sounded like the unit for me. And now that I have it, I am LOVING it! As far as build quality, I can't compare this to any other cup holder mount, but it definitely is rock solid! The compression arms on each side will fit a wide range of devices! My S3 with its case EASILY fits. With the phone securely mounted, I can easily grab the charging cable and AUX cable and plug them in (its open ended, so there's nothing to get in the way) without the phone slipping. When I need to, I can quickly and easily squeeze the release buttons with one hand and the arms extend so I can grab the phone (to answer a phone call if I don't have my bluetooth or when I'm getting out). The phone is very secure in this mount and the mount itself is very secure in the cup holder thanks to the adjustable base. My cup holder sits beside my radio so this unit is clear of all controls and shift levers. It puts the phone up so that I can easily see it in my peripheral vision! I am EXTREMELY satisfied with this unit so far! Since it doesn't appear to have any competition, I would not hesitate to order another one if anything happened to it, even if Macally didn't for some reason honor the one year warranty!

Excellent design
I took the time to read the reviews of the various cup-holder smartphone mounts and decided on this one. It did not disappoint. I have an iPhone 4 in an EXOGEAR Exolife iPhone 4 Battery Case (Black) , which makes the whole phone bigger. With the set of larger side grips provided with this mount, installed in the middle slots, the phone fits nicely and securely, but it's not difficult to slide it out. There is enough adjustability to fit many different phones. What's more, all of the iPhone's buttons and connectors are fully accessible. The swivel action has a solid feel, and is nicely detented so it won't change position from road vibrations. The gooseneck is also stiff, but that's a good thing for the same reason. My Audi S4 has a push-in-push-out cup-holder in the center console, above the radio and in front of the right side center vent. The Mccally mount puts the phone screen in an excellent position. No need to take your eyes off the road to glance at the screen. On the base, turn the adjuster counterclockwise and it expands to fill the cup holder, making it rock steady. With the "Waze" app, this turns the phone into the ultimate GPS system! Even though it's made of plastic, the overall feel of the product is weighty and solid. If you're looking for a cup-holder mount, this is the one you should consider. For the price, it's a no-brainer.

Absolutely brilliant bit of kit
Like a lot of people I would imagine, I've found that there is a distinct lack of good quality holders for the ipod touch. There are some really good ones for the iphone but as the ipod touch is a lot slimmer than the iphone, these usually don't fit properly. I previously used a bog standard holder that stuck to the windscreen to hold my ipod in the car and while it was ok, whenever it was cold, the suction cup just couldn't hold it in place so it kept falling off. I eventually broke it as the cheap plastic part that actually held the ipod snapped. If you're wondering why this product is a bit more expensive than other similar holders, it's the difference in quality. I received my order yesterday and I'm really happy with it! The build quality feels very sturdy just the fact that it doesn't rely on sticking to the windscreen is very useful. The base fits snugly into my cup holder and doesn't move at all when the car is moving, even over speed bumps. The holders grip my ipod nice and tightly but still allow for easy release. The best part of the holder though is actually more due to the position of my cup holder. I have a seat ibiza and the cup holder comes out of the dashboard just above the stereo. This means that the ipod is in perfect reaching distance when driving and more importantly, you don't have a bright light in your face while you're driving. I found this to be a bit of a problem with my other holder as when I was driving in the dark, the position of the light from the ipod in my immediate field of vision ruined my night vision so it was difficult to see in the dark. The only problem with this product is that part of the cradle covers the headphone socket on an ipod touch. If you need this to connect an FM transmitter as I do, you have to put the ipod in upside down. That being said, the holder keeps it in place so it won't fall out so it's not really an issue. Overall, a very well made product, easily worth the price. How good the holder is for you is essentially dependant on where your cup holders are!
