A Great Classic Cutlass Sword, at Machette Prices
From the male of the family. I wanted a couple of fighting swords for home defense, and this Cold Steel cutlass is certainly one of my picks. We have a large property, with lots of wildlife on it as well, including javelina (in the pig family), bobcats, coyotes, and more, so it's nice to have a hefty longknife at my side while working out there. Of course, call it a machete and you can get it for a far better price than most "swords," so that's fine with me. I was watching a video on knife fighting, and one of the instructors said, "if you get in a knife fight, don't ever think you're going to use your arm or body to block a blade. Your best defense is always, don't get cut. To that end, go for your attacker's knife hand." Then I remembered reading stories about battles from medieval times when women would go around after the fighting, and fill entire baskets with fingers. You know what I'm leading up to: if you're going to ever use a sword or longknife in self defense, you want to be sure and protect your hand. Most machetes and even a lot of swords don't do this for you. This cutlass does! That tough polypropylene handle will stop a blade -- or thorny branches, for that matter, if you're using it as a machete. We need the hand protection! As for the blade, it is 2 feet of high carbon steel. That means, it will take an edge. Mine came reasonably sharp, but not enough (and I do understand that it's a safety feature, not to ship a blade with it's keenest edge. The makers don't want your first experience to be slicing yourself!). A few minutes with a file, then stone, and I had a wicked edge. The handle is 6 inches long, and fits my hand very well. I like that the blade has a baked on anti-rust finish, and that the cutlass came with a canvas sheath. This is a great price for what you get! Recommended.

Well worth the money great cross between a small ax and a mechete
Can do must of the chopping work of a small-medium ax and all the duties of a machete. Very well made very well put together. Size is about perfect in it will pack well but still big enough to handle any chopping task shy of cutting down a larger diameter tree. Will chop kindling and firewood well especially if you use a small log as a mallet to assist in spitting wood. I feel a must have camping and survival tool. Sheath is also well made and not all cheaply done. Well worth the price you really get your moneys worth from this chopping tool. Like to add when I bought this Cold Steel Royal Kukri machete I also bought a Accusharp carbide blade knife sharpener. The Cold steel Kukri came only OK sharp. Yes it would cut you, but I felt it to dull for my liking. So I did 50 passes with the Accusharp, tested the blade for improvement and repeated, 50 test, 50 test etc. After 250 passes the Cold Steel Kukri was very sharp and no doubt I could get it even sharper as it's sharpness improved noticeably with every 50 passes of the sharpener, but I got it sharp enough to cut anything I will need to with minimal effort. All in all I can highly recommend both the Cold Steel Kukri Machete and the Accusharp knife sharpener.

I like Big knives and I cannot lie.
Another quality purchase! I admit to having an addiction to machetes and Kukris'. I like Big Knives and I cannot lie . This 25" blade came out of the box SHARP. It did have a little excess oil on the blade, but that just shows that Cold Steel cares about sending their blades protected from rust. Great quality control! Now then, after a run over a strop, it seemed adequately honed and ready for action. At the log pile, it delivered several hard chops and threw chunks impressively. I was a bit concerned over the blade seeming thin at 2.8 mm, but it cut well, and stayed fairly sharp. No vibration was evident. It is LARGE, and won't be riding my hip any time soon, but it is meant for the canoe anyway. I can tell that it WILL be a workout in an extended session, but that's okay. The sheath is very simple and doesn't have molle capability but I can work around that. The price at $35.00 is a steal. I would recommend this beast for anyone that wants a big knife!

Good So Far
I just received this yesterday and have not field tested it yet. I will update my review when I do. So far let me give my initial impressions. The Sheath: The sheath is a well made cordura sheath with a plastic tip to prevent accidental blade protrusions. It's not flimsy and is somewhat rigid. There are 2 snaps on the top of the sheath that you unsnap to remove the machete and resnap to secure it. A lot of people don't like this design and continue to berate the sheath as "cheap" and "bad design". I've thought a lot about this and come to the conclusion that with the kukri type design of the blade there is no other option. The Blade: Well, reviewers are right on the money when they say that is will not come to you sharpened from the factory. I literally ran my finger down the edge of the blade and it was like a butter knife. The only chance I had at being cut was by one of the million burrs or knicks. You WILL have to spend some time putting a decent edge on it. I used a dremel and then a DMT Diafold course sharpener. After about an hour or so I finally had a decent edge on it. How it will hold up, time will tell. Other than that, the blade quality seems to be good. This is not a brush clearer as much as it is a chopper. It has a good weight and forward momentum that leads me to believe it can do much damage in a single swing. I highly recommend you put a lanyard of it, your wrist will thank you and you'll have much more control of the blade. The Handle: The handle very much reminds me of a bicycle handle. The grip is good, but like I suggested, a lanyard is a must. With the kukri design, there is so much forward weight that I think some might have trouble controlling it. The Dreaded Sticker: I have heard horror stories of people ruining the finish on their blade from using solvents to remove the sticker. Eventhough this is a machete made for work I understand that any wear on the finish is better to come from use in the field rather than a pesky sticker. Too many overthink things though. After taking as much sticker off I could with my fingernail and hot water I was left with a mess of glue on the blade. This came off EASILY with some dish soap and a sponge (the kind with a green scrubbing side and yellow sponge side). Use the green side of the sponge with some dish soap hot water and it will come off very quickly without hurting the finish. Overall: So far I'm quite happy with my $21 purchase. Time will tell how the edge holds up, but I think it will do ok. I wish this were made in the USA or another quality country like the UK, Germany, etc instead of South Africa. I know the blade would have come in far superior form. Would have probably cost 2-3 times as much, but it is what it is.

Machetes are Cool!!!
I had high expectations for this machete, based on the positive reviews I have seen. It did not disappoint. The blade arrived with adequate sharpening. The blade was well finished. Thus far it has handled all the tasks I have thrown at it with relative ease. To make this review a little more helpful, I will give a little more detail about this machetes performance and quality. STEEL QUALITY This machete is made out of 1055 Carbon steel. It holds an edge well. When in use, this steel is just flexible enough to avoid breaking without compromising performance. It wouldn't be easy break the blade on the Cold Steel Cutlass Machete. For what you pay, I believe this machete's steel quality is astounding. BALANCE It's a cutlass. As such, it isn't usually a very balanced weapon. But I found no difficulty maneuvering the machete during use. I would say that while the balance is not perfect, it does not detract from the functionality of this machete. PRACTICAL PERFORMANCE When subjected to abuse, this machete delivers. If you need a machete that you can abuse, the Cold Steel Cutlass is the machete for you. It's simple to use, maintain, and performs typical tasks with ease. I was able to cut through a one and a half inch thick wooden stick with one blow. That's pretty good for a machete that costs about $30. OVERALL VALUE Taking into account the price tag for this machete, I am convinced that this machete is an amazing value. It does everything you could plausibly expect it to do. It's made out of good steel, it handles well, and is priced well. All in all, I am convinced that you will not find many machetes that are a better value than this one. I own swords (including an ordinary cutlass), and this machete performs more like a sword than a machete. It is truly a joy to use the Cold Steel Cutlass Machete. I hope this review was helpful. If you have any questions, comment. I'll be happy to answer them (if I'm able to!). Enjoy your machete!!!

Cool Kukri concept Machete, Average Quality
It is sometimes good to disregard the brand of a product when reviewing to ensure maximum objectivity. Were it not for the Cold Steel brand, I doubt so many people would defend negative reviews of this machete so feverishly. There is definitely a cult-like following among some people of Cold Steel. Ok, on to the machete which I received. First problem and probably the worst nightmare of blade enthusiasts is having a blade that is not true. From the handle to the tip of the blade, there was about a 5 degree offset or bent on my machete. Very obvious visually as soon as I picked up the machete. A slight effort on my part and I was able to bend it back fairly close to true but not entirely. This steel's temper is nothing to boast about. It is definitely easily bent and malleable. This damage or defect could have occurred either in the factory or afterwards somewhere during the handling process. Definitely a letdown in terms of quality. Now the most common complaint of this machete is the condition of the edge it comes in. Mine was no exception. It is a very rough edge and had sections where the steel was rolled over. This is surely a sign of poor workmanship at the factory. This was no surprise to me as I had half expected it and I plan to spend some time putting on a decent edge. However, the machetes I have seen for sale at retail stores all have much more decently finished edges than this one. Why is this Cold Steel brand product allowed such leeway? The black finish on the blade is good and similar to that of many other machetes. I particularly like the profile of this kukri blade. It has just the right amount of curve to it for me and not too much like some other kukri profiles. This was the main reason I chose this machete. I wanted a decent and cheap Kukri style chopper. The handle is pretty nice and is one of the strong points of this machete. It is not a completely hard plastic but rather has a slight cushioning property to it. This helps in absorbing shock. The handle material here is listed as polypropylene but so is the handle on the Cold Steel Katana Machete, which I also own. But that one is a hard rigid type plastic and feels different. Lot's of people have disliked the sheath. I actually find it to be slightly above average compared to the sheaths similar machetes come with in retail stores. It is designed very practically and the small plastic reinforcement panels at the tip is nice. The belt loop stitching is sturdy and done well with a X pattern reinforcement. Overall the Kurki machete concept is the best feature of this machete considering the price. The quality of the machete itself is only average and a bit under what I expected of Cold Steel. I am giving this 3 stars.

Excellent tool for heavy clearing.
I swore I would not write a review on this product until I tested it well enough to give a really comprehensive and useful review that might help other folks. 1. The setting I am using this in is southeastern Louisiana bottomland woods that contain a mixture of many thorny bushes /thorny vines up to saplings large fan palmettos and heavy larger sized trees. I mention this, because I want anyone reading this review to understand this tool worked superbly for this type of terrain... but may not be the best choice for other terrains. I also do not baton wood as there is no need for me to do this so I don't think it would be the proper application for this tool though it may work for this task. 2. The main use for this tool for me was heavy trail clearing and then transitioning to camping/bushcraft/survival type uses. Heavy trail clearing was by far the thing this tool would be most used for. The main thing that confronts us in these types of woods is switching between clearing thorn bushes, thorny vines, blackberry type bushes, weeds and grasses, then switching right back to saplings and trees in the same section of trail. What we have repeatedly seen in the past is that the tools that work great for cutting the grasses and vines (cane knifes, two handed cane knifes, thin bladed very sharp machetes) are not nearly heavy enough to cut trees or saplings with ease. Alternately, the tools that are heavy enough for light to medium chopping tasks (sp8 machete, rtak II, woodsmans pal, short handled thick bladed brush hooks, and heavy machetes) are usually terrible for the brush clearing especially due to their blunt angles and short reach which result In a nice big pin cushion of an arm due to burying it in the thorn bushes. These heavier tools have a tendency to crush and break the thorn bushes/vines but not cleanly slice through them. And of course after heavy chopping with the lighter tools, you either wear yourself out or see loose rivets in the handles etc. 3. So now we come to the cold steel ATC. I wont bore you with the specs as they can be found easily online, but will go directly to real world experience. I will cover the sheath first as that was the component that I found a few flaws with. But with the chopper performing so well, I couldn't bring myself to drop it to a 4 star rating for minor sheath issues that would not be a deal breaker for me. Also, there is a great video on cold steels website with the product in use. Shipping from amazon/seller was quick and easy so no problems in that area. Price IMO was well worth it. The Sheath. The sheath was made of a heavy ballistic type nylon with a plastic type liner in the inside. It also has a heavy plastic guard riveted to the bottom outside of the sheath to prevent it from cutting or poking through the bottom of the sheath. It works fine for this purpose. The machete slides in through the side of the sheath which is open on one side from top to almost the bottom and two small straps reach across the opening and button the sheath closed. There is also a strap and button that wraps around the handle. The only minor flaws that I could find with this design is the two straps have a memory and keep covering the sheath opening as you try to insert the machete. Perhaps cold steel could have added a piece of Velcro to the back side to keep the flaps out the way as you try to re-insert the blade. This was not an issue with the strap that secured the handle section as they fell to the side and did not get in the way. All buttons were of high quality and securely snapped into place and served their purpose very well. Next, the machete is a very tight fit in the bottom section of the sheath and has to be pivoted into the bottom and pushed firmly to seat it. The machete is also not quick draw in anyway even though it is carried over the shoulder. It takes a little time to remove, and cannot be quick drawn, but this is more than made up for with the extremely secure fit and safe carry in the sheath. To me its a very worthwhile tradeoff if I'm carrying this thing for long distances. On to the shoulder strap. This was a slightly weaker part of the sheath IMO, but again not a deal breaker. The shoulder strap is about 1" wide and is riveted to the sheath at the top. There is also a short section riveted to the bottom end with a lever type locking buckle for the longer top section of strap to pass through. One can thereby adjust the length of the strap for over the shoulder carry. Here is the good and bad of it. The strap could benefit from being slightly wider although I have no complaints with it currently. The buckle is the weak point. It is plastic and seems like it would not take much abuse. Also it's impossible to push the lever all the way down as the strap seems a bit big for the buckle and I fear forcing it down further would break the tab. Although as the strap pulls against your chest, it does tighten the buckles action and does not let the strap slide through at all. The strap has ample length and on my chest (46") I have at least a foot to a foot and a half extra strap for adjustment over heavier clothing. One last little minor point is there is another buckle to secure the extra free hanging strap which is poorly designed. It slides over the sling but is a pocket clip style on top that the extra string slides under. It can have a tendency to constantly slide out from under the clip which is all cheap plastic. I would have liked to see a plastic slider type buckle to keep the extra strapping secure, but at the low price this sells for it cant be made much better. Again, I mention this so you'll know but the blade far outweighs these minor flaws. There is no provision to carry this on the belt, but it would be ridiculous to do so due to the long length so this is a moot point to me. The machete was comfortable and secure to carry even while running the trails for great distances....in the rain....because you forgot to bring your poncho......The only time the sheath could be a bit aggravating is when using the machete. It has a tendency to slide around to your front when swinging as it is flexible without the knife in it. I take it off and put it in my backpack when using it to solve this problem. Overall...for the low price of 33.00 I thought the sheath was great. There were a few small issues I listed, but these things most likely keep this thing very affordable. Also sheath mods could be made if desired for very little money. The Machete I loved it!!!!!!!! Black coated blade came extremely sharp from the factory. It is of a good steel that sharpens well and holds an edge well....if you don't let your kids chop sand with it......The long two handed handle was well made, felt solid, and had a good checkered textured grip to it. I wear gloves when heavy trail clearing, but it don't feel this handle would give you blisters as quickly as traditional machetes do. The design of the handle worked well for one handed swinging by choking up on the handle and even better for two handed hold with massive swinging/ heavy chopping tasks. Finish is holding up well thus far but I keep some wd-40 on it after use so it never rusts. I'm sure the finish will wear eventually, but I am wearing this sucker out on the trails and it has done well so far. So now my favorite part. It cuts free standing thorn vines, blackberry vines, and palmetto stems clean through!!! It sliced them just as cleanly as my cane knife does....BUT...with the extra reach and absolutely no crushing or breaking which makes thorn bush clearing a pain in the butt.....and the forearm when it comes out looking like a pin cushion. I hate whacking a thorn vine 50 times because it just keeps bouncing back and forth until it breaks...never cutting it. This thing sliced through them with no issues. Then as an added bonus, when I transitioned to the saplings I was easily slicing through them with a single swing. When moving on to the heavier chopping, the two handed chopping method made short work of trees up to 5". I chopped and sliced everything imaginable with this thing and it did a great job with all of it. The blade is large and a little heavier than a large machete but did not tire me out after trail clearing for two hours. Because it cut so well it made the work less tedious...and best of all no loose rivets with shaky blades between the handles. I found it to be well balanced with a slight weight forward feel but just enough to be helpful and not a hindrance. The quality of the edge made the free standing slicing easy and the extra heft made the chopping easy as well. There was no vibration and bounce that is common when trying to chop wood with a regular machete. All in all, I found no shortcomings with the machete and only minor ones with the sheath. This is probably the best tool I have ever purchased for this type of work (and believe me I have many...just ask my wife) and it far outperforms several other tools I have mentioned above. The best feature is that it takes the place of both types of tools I mentioned above yet only cost around $33.00 at the time of this review. You cannot go wrong with this tool at this price.

Great Bowie style Machete.
Who doesn't want a Big Bowie Knife that also happens to be a Machete. This thing is great, fits the hand solid. The handle is smooth but stays put. It has good weight to it for that chopping benefit, it comes pretty sharp, although everyone has a different position on sharpness. And it comes with a sheath that is really great, my Ontario SP10 should have a sheath like this, really well suited to the Black Bear Bowie. I give this thing 5 stars, it's simple but will do the job you need it to do. For campers, hunters, bushcrafters this Bowie would be a welcome addition to your gear kit. It was like a really great price from Amazon, if you have people to buy for, get them all one.

Perfect little backpacking/survival machete.
Pros: Light but enough weight at end to chop like a small axe. Came with a rough but effective edge. Decent quality steel with enough flex as to not easily warp & break. Comes with a sheath. Big enough to do light to moderate chopping, hacking & slashing. Can even use the flat tip as a small shovel. Blade came with a coat of oil so you know the product & its steel was made & handled with professional care. Product arrived in just a few days. Price was unbeatable!!! Cons: The sheath though serves its purpose well & the snap buckles hold the blade snug because of the design I would be careful slinging it around on your packsack, etc to rigorously as I have a slight concern of the snaps coming undone over time & the blade falling out BUT sew a couple small pieces of velcro or an other buckle or two & it should holdfast. I should be getting quite a bit of use out of this simple yet extremely versatile piece of equipment. All in all for the price I give it 5/5 stars.

L'ho appena ricevuto: quarantasei centimetri de fero!

Exactly as Advertised
It showed up as advertised dimensions are nearly spot on and no warps in the blade oiled before shipped so if whiped clean there would be more oil inside the scabbard only complaint is actual width of the steel at 1/8th of an inch i would gladly pay more for a thicker cold steel product still the steel is strong and doesnt bend when swung around overall a great product for the price I paid
