Can this be used for goldfish?

Yes, it can hold water, sand, gravel, dirt, etc... However, if you plan to keep goldfish for a long time you would probably want to buy a goldfish tank that has ventilation and water filter system.

Any estimates on what to expect for battery life?

I would use Duracell batteries they last longer.

Can ladybugs be stored in here? Could they escape the ventilated holes?

Ladybugs would do great! The holes are very small.
