An empowering guide to helping children with OCD thrive and find relief from their most distressing symptoms, for kids as young as age four to teens โDr. Chansky has accomplished a tour de force, which is certain to offer much-needed assistance both to children with OCD-related problems and to their families.โโJeffrey M. Schwartz, MD, author of Brain Lock Parents of children with obsessive-compulsive disorder know firsthand how confusing and even frightening the symptoms of OCD can be. They have questions about how this condition works and how they can best help their kids: Which behaviors are part of ordinary childhood, and which are symptoms of OCD? How can they help their child take back control of their lives from disruptive thoughts and debilitating rituals? What should they do if their child experiences a relapse in symptoms? In Freeing Your Child from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder , child psychologist and OCD expert Dr. Tamar E. Chansky helps parents make sense of a childโs experience with this very confusing but highly treatable disorder. She shares intuitive, easy-to-implement strategies for helping kids and teens confidently outsmart the โbrain tricks and trapsโ of OCD, alongside scripts for explaining symptoms to children of all ages and targeted advice for navigating a wide range of OCD themes. Dr. Chansky also advises parents on how they can tailor treatment to their childโs needs with fully updated information on diagnostic criteria, medication, effective therapy modalities, and treatment outcomes, as well as the most recent findings on PANS and PANDAS, the sudden appearance of OCD symptoms after a strep or viral infection. With its research-backed and reassuring guidance, Freeing Your Child from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder spells out exactly what parents can say and do to help their children reclaim their lives. Review: The book we needed - We only realized that our 15yo son has OCD this year. It has been such a learning experience, and not easy. This book has been so encouraging and helpful. Encouraging: from the first page, it reassures us that OCD is very manageable. We really needed to know this. It feels so hopeless and overwhelming on many days. And our son needs to hear this, too. Helpful: the book is very detailed with explanations about what our son is going through, and practical help that we can give him. I first started listening to the Audible version, but quickly realized I needed a hard copy to highlight and take notes. This book is our new reference manual, and I predict it will be well-worn. Review: This book is like getting a big, supportive hug! - When our 13 year old daughter, nearly overnight, came down with an intense case of OCD we were clueless - on every front. We had no family history of OCD or any mental illness, we were living in a foreign country where they speak a foreign language, and we did not know what to do or where to turn. Fairly quickly we understood that our daughter had OCD but we will still trying to sort through how to get her proper help for the condition which was devastating her life and the life of our entire family. That is when I found this book. In the terrible months before we found the right doctor to help our daughter, this book was the big hug, the shoulder to lean on, the wise counselor. This book was everything to me. Very few mental health professionals who do not truly specialize in OCD really understand the disorder. This book was our guiding light until we found an OCD specialist. And on that note, I will say, please, when looking for help for your child with OCD, follow the author's advice and find someone who specializes in OCD and ERP therapy.

Goodbook
It is a very good book. Including mindfulness into the cognitive behavior therapy. Also, include the homophobic obsessions and hoarding

Buy with a pack of highlighters!!
This book tells you what OCD is, whatโs going on inside your childโs brain, and how to work with them to help them manage it. This is what I needed as a parent. I was confused, angry, frustrated, and sad. Iโm only 60 pages in and canโt stop highlighting. Now I feel informed, empowered, and in control! If your child has been diagnosed, reading this book should be mandatory homework!

Takes the fear out of having OCD or watching your child struggle with it
This is an excellent book. Reading this book has made me not fearful of the weird things OCD does and gives me a way to fight back and help my child fight back. I can tell the author of this book really put her all her knowledge, experience, heart and soul into this book. By reading this book, I learned so much about OCD and how to handle it and prevent it from worsening. The knowledge in this book is irreplaceable and I give thanks to the author for writing it.

good for parents and professionals
I am a family therapist who has been away from working for several years and starting to reeducate myself. This book is wonderful and must be such a great resource for parents who have a child with OCD symptoms. It really educates the reader about the illness and also reassures them with specific ways to frame the disease to the child so that it will not be overwhelming to them and to the parents as well. I found it very informative and would recommend it to parents and professionals who work with children with this type of problem.

Excellent For Struggling Parents
This is an excellent book for parents like us who find themselves in the confusing world of OCD. We were completely at a loss about what was happening to our daughter but this book explains what is happening and what to do about it. Most importantly, this book helped us regain our footing as parents which in turn has helped our daughter. If you and your spouse are reacting differently to your child's OCD, this book will help you find a more balance understanding and response. My only regret is ordering this book in Kindle format. This is a book you'll want to highlight, make notes in and bookmark and refer to again. Although you can do those things on Kindle, this just feels like a book you want to interact with more. I'm reordering as a hard copy.

Highly recommend!
This has been a great book to help me understand what my son has been going through. The book does an excellent job of breaking the concepts down and putting them in easy to understand language. Iโve found so many helpful strategies to help me help my son. I highly recommend this book!

I read this book when it looked like nothing would help us
I read this book when it looked like nothing would help us. This book did. It gave me an insight into how an OCD mind works and just how to combat and cope with it. We've had many small but significant break-throughs since adopting the techniques outlined in this book. Most importantly I now know we can break it.
