Another part that for what you pay for the truck should be standard equipment especially if you want to keep your tailgate. Tacoma tailgates can be removed in seconds and the thieves will simply put your tailgate on some online classified locally and try to sell it back to you. Install is not difficult, just tedious as you have to run its wire harness from the passenger door kick panel to the tailgate under the truck next to the frame, the path is easy to follow as it just runs along and zip-ties to the existing harness for the rear camera. It comes with everything you need including both standard and even metal zip-ties for where the harness is near the muffler and a new body grommet with a hole for the harness to replace the original one you take out to run the wire. The lock actuator simply bolts right to the tailgate lock after you remove the back panel from the bed, the bolt you use is in the tailgate from the factory. Once it's in, the lock on the tailgate will operate exactly as if it's one of the passenger doors. Two clicks on the key to unlock, one click on the lock button locks it and all the doors. No need for the physical key anymore to lock the tailgate and it's always locked when the truck is locked making it impossible to remove in the 10 seconds it takes an open tailgate to steal. A thief would have to pick the lock and they will almost certainly move on to an easier target before they bother with that as its no longer a quick theft.

I watched a couple YouTube videos and was slightly confused on which side do I run the wire assembly. Most went to the passenger side and a few went to the driver side. I pulled the panels on both and it looked like the passenger side was the way to go. The reason why I suggest getting only Toyota parts is the ease of install. Plug and play. The hardest part was getting the wires into the clips in the tailgate and frame. Other than that, it was super easy to install. I connected the wires prior to zip tying everything together to make sure everything fit correctly. Worked perfectly. Look at a couple YouTube videos and you will be ready to install. The dealer quoted me 175 dollars per hour and it would take them 1.5 hours. I don’t have a lift and it took me far less time. Saved a few hundred bucks, The lock isn’t as clunky as people made it sound. The Tacoma I installed this in is a 2023 Off-road short bed double cab. Definitely worth it.

I have dealt a good bit with automotive accessories, and this was outstanding! I wanted to add a locking handle to my 2020 Tacoma, and bought this kit based on reviews and the Toyota reputation. Lots of zip ties, including metal ones for the exhaust area. The loom is nicely constructed, and insulated for where it is near the exhaust pipe. Everything looks (and I assume IS) OEM quality. It all went together nicely in just about an hour. And the instructions... Don't be intimidated by the number of pages. The instructions cover every detail. If you are not a beginner, take a breath and follow the steps, or you will find yourself steps ahead and doing something wrong. The best accessory instructions I have seen. They could only be improved by having color photographs, instead of the photocopy black and white. Four stars for "easy to install." I am referring to the skill required. This is not a D-I-Y for a total mechanical beginner. If you change your own oil CONFIDENTLY, you should be fine. Money well spent!

I particularly like the ease of installation of this OEM tailgate lock kit by Toyota. It takes very little disassembly and is plug and play. It seamlessly fits into the Toyota system. The quality of the product is top notch like all other Toyota products. The kit comes with all the necessary parts, including plastic and metal zip ties and clips. It fits perfectly in my 2023 2WD Toyota Tacoma SR5 with 5 foot bed. The kit is worth the price. Remote Key Fob locking keeps me from forgetting to lock the bed. After I added a hard bed cover, it is a great addition to my peace of mind.

The install was fairly simple and it work flawlessly.

Installed on a 2023 dbl cab tacoma. Double pressing unlock on remote opens all doors including tailgate. Single press unlock will not open tailgate. Using smart key to open driver or passenger door will not open tailgate. Installing is fairly simple, but a little time consuming and potentially a little dirty. Tricky parts for me were the new clips that secure the two wire bundles to the tailgate and body. In my case, they were a little hard to remove without understanding how they work. Push in the release levers, tilt that side out, then push the whole assembly towards the release levers. Now the whole clip will be free. Running and securing the new cable bundle was simple but time consuming. Cable tie-ing the new wire bundle along side existing bundle was simple enough in most parts. But lying on the ground and securing the metal cable ties high up where the muffler is a bit tricky especially when dirt/dust is dropping in your eyes. I've never used these metal cable ties before, cutting the excess strap off after installing took a few different tool choices before using small metal shears. Watching a few youtube videos really helped, especially where the grommet location is under the body.
