I’ve fitted it to a garden gate which was five and a half centimetres thick and there was more scope to go wider

Can the code be changed regularly?

No. To change the code you have to take the unit off the door and rearrange the metal tabs in the back. Fitting the unit is difficult as explained in m original comment.
