Physics
I had a rubbish physics teacher at school, pity because the subject really interested me. So, many years later I bought this book and it's great. Explains the subject well. I'm learning as lot!

Excellent accounts of Physics through the ages
This is a great book. Although the publishers and format suggest a target audience age starting with an interested teenager, Iโm a teacher and Iโve found plenty to like here. Itโs not really about hard Physics, more of an account about how Physicists developed our understanding of Physics concepts in a chronological context. Very much a tale of โon the shoulders of giantsโ I valued the opportunity to learn about these scientists, albeit briefly, as people, as characters rather than simply a name associated to a law or a unit. Little details like that are important to me in trying to make lessons more engaging, so reading it has been time well spent. If you read it cover to cover, you will find a small amount of repetition but this is necessary when creating a book that you can also dip into and the authors\editors have done a great job in respect of this compromise.

Surprisingly easy to read
As a layman, I found this book easy to read (although so far I have only read about a third). Obviously a little bit of knowledge is helpful but it does not go into any depth (and isnโt meant to).

Absolutely brilliant!
I purchased this book as I have a huge interest in physics even though Iโm an organic chemist. The book is well structured and contains everything you need to know about physics. The foreword by Jim Al Khalili is inspiring and written eloquently. I have been a fan of his for many years. He is a brilliant physicist with excellent knowledge on the subject. I love the idea of โin contextโ as it gives you a quick introduction to the historical aspect of the subject. I would highly recommend this book to for both children and adults alike. In my opinion it is one of the best physics books out there.

Really good books for explaining complex ideas
With a strong Physics and Engineering background everything gets REALLY complex and mathematical very quickly when trying to explain some of the concepts. What this style of books does is remind you of some of the basic principles without maths, allowing me to talk to my kids about the things in science that I'm passionate about. Some of the topics are a little skimmed over, but to be fair they still explain the importance of the ideas. We have the Physics, Technology, and Maths books. All a great style, easily accessible and my 11YO daughter can happily browse without help as the writing style is perfect for her Harry Potter level lexicon. Across the 3 books we have, some highlights: Maths: Fourier analysis (weak explanation but conveys the message well), Group theory and the rubix cube, number theory and development. Technology: Central Heating systems, Helicopters, Lasers, The Internet, Locks, hydraulics Physics: Quantum field theory (written SO well), nuclear power and bombs, Relatviity As I said, some incredibly important topics that permeate or lives but kids never get access too until they're grown ups. These books help provide the context for amazing scientific and mathematical discoveries. Stay with me here, but I believe that scientific fields have now advanced so far into areas completely inaccessible to the lay person that a sense of distrust and knowledge elitism has overwhelmed the amazing work our human society is doing. So what these books do amazingly well is help to bridge this gap, and help any reader to feel like the topics are more inclusive to them. And this is what great writing and education is all about. (Sorry, rant over).

Got it for my daughter
I got this textbook for my daughter while she was preparing for her GCSE. She loved how easy it was to follow and really understood the topics.

Excellent Tween and upwards book
Have always loved DK books and bought loads of the children range aimed at up to 12 years. This range of books is superb next step for tweens and upwards. Still short, illustrated and well explained ideas but certainly more advanced and complex enough for adults. Thoroughly recommend

A Great Read
This is a great book for people who want to understand physics and learn about the physicists who invented and/or worked on. This book is not going to teach you how to become a physicist. The is no math in this book. But, it is a great book for the general public who want to learn about the subject. The book is written in sections by subjects. Then explains the individuals that were attached to the subject and explains what the subject is about. If you are looking to learn how to be a physicist, you need to look elsewhere for a physics book that also has math. This book is not a stepping stone towards learning how to do physics. This is a book that's a fun read, yet informative.

A fantastic book
This volume illustrates the fact that we do stand on the shoulders of giants: the men and women through the ages who spent their lives trying to understand the relationship of things. There is very little Math involved- some formulae but well presented. While not a book for children I would recommend it for the precocious mind. This book inspired me to break off and read more about the individuals that were covered:Maxwell, Dirac etc

Great content and design
Super book, I rarely rate 5/5!. If you want to have a new fresh intro to the world of physics and applied physics then this is on of the best.
