The Complete Guide to Rat Training: Tricks and Games for Rat Fun and Fitness

This book is great. I got it for my dad for Christmas because he is obsessed with how smart our rats are. He hasn't really read it and applied it to our rats yet, but looking through all the pictures of all the adorable baby rats has been fun. This book teaches you how to teach your rat little tricks like responding to his name, sitting still, going through obstacles, etc. Very informative. Also teaches you a bit about how to care for your rat. Since we've had rats for 10 years or more, we didn't need those instructions. But it is nice for new rat owners. :)

This book will teach you exactly what it promises; rat training. I have two rats and got them without very little prior knowledge of behavior or training. I read this book and it is a mass of information! It's sprinkled with stories of incredible rats in history, there are directions and diagrams for obstacle courses and props for advanced tricks! The psychology of the rat is right on with what the author teaches. My rarities learned to come to their names very shortly after I started training them with the direction of this book. Excellent buy!

I bought this for my 12 year old daughter who got two baby male rats. She wanted to teach them tricks. She had done a lot of internet research, but this book was better because it spent some time explaining WHY tricks work. She didn't know she was learning about animal behavior, but that's exactly what this book taught her. The author's style was very accessible and the pictures were nice. I think my daughter's favorite part was the assessment to see how smart your rat is. Apparently she has one very smart rat and one "loveable little dummy". Sure enough, the smart one will learn any trick she tries to teach him. The other one would prefer to cuddle. I highly recommend this book to any rat owner who would like to enjoy his or her rats even more. I think your rats would agree. Most rats really love the attention and the stimulation this kind of interaction provides.

This would be a great book for people who don't know much about training, if you've trained other animals it's just the same information but focusing on only positive reinforcement which it should. What saved the purchase is it did have some nice tips on how to go about some tricks. I would recommend it, but if you know much about training half the book isn't that helpful.

I just read through this primer, having wanted to start learning more about animal behavior and training. I have rats, and thought this would be a good start! I appreciate that the author begins with information on understanding rats and their behavior and body language, as this is essential for anyone wanting to build a two way street of trust. There is a great section on behavioral training (how to introduce rats safely, how to train rats to be calmer around their humans or in other situations, etc) as well as the sections on more traditional trick training.

Great product, great quality/condition especially for a used book - - I love the way the author breaks the training concepts and techniques down into "bite-sized" easy to understand the basics of training and how rats think, learn, and communicate... Loved it, I would definitely recommend it to anyone that might be interested in learning more about rat training (or any other animal training for that matter!)

Rats make amazing pets! The most helpful part of this book for me was the "trust training" exercises, because my rats were not handled properly when young. They were very skittish at first and would completely panic when I held them. However, now they are excited to see me and love coming out of their cage. A big secret of the book is finding treats that they like, and bribing your ratties to like you (haha). We're working on the basic tricks now, one of them has already learned to come to me when I call him! Excellent book, great pictures. Debbie Ducommum truly is the Rat Lady!

This book covers completely different territory than any other rat book I have seen. It is not about care and feeding but specifically to help learn about rats, how to train them, and it's full of useful advice. The stories and pictures are great entertainment. State of the art terms of science and learning. See TED series video on rat training and the project that uses them in Africa to find mines, diagnose TB, and to look for people in rubble after earthquakes. We have enjoyed our rats so much more since we got the book.

Very nice book and shipped in time. A must for a beginner rat trainer. It helps a lot with suggestions for many fun tricks.

Lovely book. Crisp, clear pictures and standard sized text. Easy to read and good tips on training your rat and a few more complicated tricks and how to keep your rat's brain stimulated for a happy and healthy rat.

Great book. Most of the books I've read on rat care have been common sense with a lot of pictures. This book was well put together and helped me communicate more effectively with my pets as well as train them. Fantastic read!
