Review: A valuable resource for the sub/acting-intern or intern in the ICU, with an Ebook FTW - As a fourth year medical student, I needed an ICU resource that was easy to read and always accessible. I started reading the print version at home and the Inkling version on the floor via iPad, but quickly realized that the electronic version was suitable for both. There were times while we were rounding that I found immediate answers or figures to help explain what we were discussing as a team. As far as content, the book is very well written, with just the right level of detail for a third/fourth year student or intern. (I imagine many residents will still appreciate the resource.) The book is also a quick read, so even though it seems quite long, you can power through chapters with ease. Marino conveys strong opinions about where the research meets or differs from practice in the ICU, but I think it is more valuable to know his opinion upfront. Review: Must read - I have been an ICU nurse for several years now. I have found this book to be helpful, a very good refresher, and at times very much a great resource for all one covers in the unit(s). It's been most useful when floating to sister units and encountering processes and diagnosis I'm not famialar with. Paul Marino has done a great job with this book. You'll find the writing easy to follow and understand ((even if you're new to critical care)). Also he covers a vast amount of data, so you won't get bored reading it. If you are a diligent student of the ICU, you will acquire a good bit of necessary knowledge from this book that will serve to better you, as you better other! Happy reading :)

One of the best medical texts I've purchased
One of the best medical texts I've purchased. An easy read, with up to date research. The combo print and inkling version is a great deal. The eBook has multiple addendums that cite new research that occurred after publication. The author clearly injects some of his personal brand of medicine into the text, but he lets you know this up front and backs all of it up through evidence. There is significant basic science, physics, and fluid dynamics reviewed in this book compared to most other clinical texts, but I personally appreciated the "deep dive" and felt it added rather than distracted from understanding.

A fast ICU text to read.
Residents and students can be easily scared in the ICU. Your patients are sick, and its up to you to figure out how to manage them. They usually are unstable (that's why they're in the ICU!!!) and tend to have very complex issues. Nowadays, ICU isn't very well taught in medical school and doing an ICU rotation is optional in your 3rd/4th years. Therefore a good text is important in case you need reference to figuring out what is going on. To be honest, I only read maybe 3-4 chapters to this point (you don't have much time when you're taking care of ICU patients) but I really enjoyed the simple way of how everything is written in this book. I've read other critical care texts where it cites a lot of good articles and theories behind things but I think the ICU book puts it in a way that's not overwhelming. That being said, the chapters I've read has left me wanting more. This is a great starter reference book and it does cite all the articles/research that it quotes from so that when you want to do more research on your own, it will be easy for you to find. I definitely enjoy the tables and graphs in this book. I never had the older versions of the book so I can't comment what upgrades have been made in this latest edition but I can definitely say that the text is not overwhelming for a medical student (especially 4th years who have had some internal medicine). I will give this book 5 stars because everyone can read this without getting too confused or overwhelmed but if you are a critical care specialist, this book only grazes the top of specific issues. You will definitely need to hit up Uptodate or scan through the new NEJM critical care series. The paper quality is also good (I hate the new medical textbooks which they print on that cheap recycled paper). In summary: Very good book for the fundamentals of ICU but don't expect immense detail.

Great reference book
Please keep in mind that I am a newer grad and have been working in the ICU for just over 9 months. This is a really great book with A LOT of wonderful information. It goes in depth and with that being said some chapters take me longer to read and really understand (having to look up word and processes I forgot or are unfamiliar with) than others. Most of the time it has adequate information in whatever I want to look up, last time it was hypothermia after cardiac arrest. Also, I have seen a couple resident docs carry around this book as well and other nurses have said it's a great book too. The couple chapters I have read have already taught me a whole hell of a lot.

The book is incredible but it needs a new edition
I'm a second year emergency medicine resident with several months of ICU rotations under my belt. I first started reading Marino's at the beginning of intern year and loved it! It's very well organized, comprehensive, and thoroughly covers concepts for ICU care that every resident and intensivist should know. However, the more I read, the more things I found that seemed a little out of date. One that really sticks out in my mind is heparin for central lines, but there were other smaller things in the book that appeared inconsistent with recent literature published after the book was written. The more of these I found, the more I started asking myself "Can I trust what I'm reading?" Ultimately it got to the point that I no longer implicitly trusted this book to provide me with information consistent with current standard of care. If this book gets a new edition, I will be FIRST in line for a hard copy. Until then, I would advise using this book only for the essential knowledge needed for critical care, and take some of the recommendations with a grain of salt.

I LOVE this book
I LOVE this book. There are a few books you read in medical school that you have difficulty putting down. This book reads so well and covers information in a way that satisfies the new and experienced intensivist. I was fearful of my ICU rotation but left having such an appreciation for the field. It's a big book so don't expect to get through all of it on a busy ICU rotation unless you're super dedicated The paper quality is good and the illustrations and images really improve understanding. If you enjoy understanding why we do the things we do go grab this book- it will plug holes in your knowledge gaps

Best book ever
Everyone laughs when I tell them how this is the best book I've ever bought. I'm not kidding, if you do any sort of critical care work (ground or air transport, ICU, sick med-surg patients etc) you should definitely buy this book. The fact that you get the full, searchable version on inkling is amazing. I use this to look up all sorts of crazy patient conditions in flight, double-check medications or treatment plans, and just to get laughs. The author is SO good at making difficult concepts very easy to understand. A few of my coworkers have bought this as well. Buy the paper version to read, then install the Ebook version to use as a reference while working. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Amazing!
This book is so informative and it’s an easy read. Lots of diagrams to help you understand the information! Only thing that would make this book better would be some practice quizzes at the end of each chapter to help you retain the knowledge!!
