The Merkur is the short-handled ?

This model is the short handle. I have no problem with the length of this model but someone with very large hands might.

Is the handle made of metal or plastic?

The handle itself is chrome plated zinc. The yellow adjustment knob on the bottom is plastic and can be chewed into destruction by French Bulldogs. Beware. Unfortunately, the stainless alternative for this item from another manufacturer is not as good as it is not an exact copy.

what is the razor made of?

Made of pot metal, die cast zinc, or also called Zamak. It was named when people gathered scraps of all types and melted them all in one pot to cast parts from. Really there is not a standard that needs followed so pot metals can differ, but usually include zinc, led, tin, copper, aluminum, magnesium and a couple others. If you keep your razors made from this metal clean and dry they can live a very long life. I have old pot metal razors from the 50's that are still in good shape and will last for many more years to come.
