Is this a real Beta 58 or is it the ripoff from China?

Good question. I can only tell you that the one I received is real. The mesh grill on the AUTHENTIC SHURE mic almost looks "spider web" like. The links are intertwined - the FAKE SHURE has a regular metal screen. The AUTHENTIC SHURE mic has a DEEP BLUE colored ring (not DARK BLUE!) around the grill. The FAKE one has like a "SKY BLUE" Also, at the BOTTOM of the mic, where the XLR pins are, the REAL SHURE mic will have the pins numbered "1, 2 and 3" and ALSO have the SHURE LOGO embossed on the base by the pins. The FAKE MICS will NOT. Hope this info HELPS.

Does this mic need phantom power of 48V?

Hello, This microphone does not require phantom power, as it is dynamic.Phantom power is required for condenser microphones, such as Shure Beta 87A.

Can anyone give a realistic assessment of how much better it is at resisting feedback than other mics? If not, any recommendations for one that does?

I have the SM58 and the BETA 58A and I like the sound of the BETA much better and I think it is louder in similar set ups. I am happy with both mics.
