Buy Fred Jones Tools for Teaching 3rd Edition: Discipline•Instruction•Motivation Primary Prevention of Discipline Problems: Read Kindle Store Reviews - desertcart.com Review: OUTSTANDING BOOK - This book is outstanding!! It offers so many practical suggestions that have helped to make me--a new teacher who will be entering her first year in the classroom this fall--feel MUCH more prepared for the school year. I initially sought out a book on classroom management because leaving student teaching, I had more questions than answers and was looking for help, and this book gave me exactly what I was looking for and more. In his book, Fred Jones talks about the day to day disruptions of the classroom, how to keep a level head and react to situations appropriately, and what to do in extreme cases. He also talks about how to prevent problems in the first place by constructing a well managed classroom environment. Jones comes from an extensive background in clinical psychology, and it shows in his book. Not to mention that in addition to being highly informative, the book is simply fun to read! Honestly, I still have two more chapters to read in this book, but I couldn't wait to write the review because even if the next two chapters are a complete flop, I have gained so much from the rest of this book that my rating would not change. I am also reading the popular "The First Days of School" by Harry Wong (I'm about 2/3 of the way through) and I think that Tools for Teaching is much better. At this point, I'm only reading The First Days of School just to feel in the loop, but I think that for anyone who has completed a teacher preparation program, you won't find much information in that book that you don't already know--unless the last 1/3 of the book takes a big turn. Bottom line, I think that Tools for Teaching is an incredible book, and is a must read for anyone who is looking for specific classroom management strategies. Thank you, Fred Jones! Review: This is an excellent, chock-full of practical advice book for any teacher ... - This is an excellent, chock-full of practical advice book for any teacher who has been frustrated by students who seem to disrupt teaching and learning. As a substitute teacher, I've had to deal with students who try my patience because I'm a sub. As a sub, I've seen how quickly discipline can deteriorate due to poor ways of dealing with unfamiliar students. But the book has been heaven-sent. I have used the methods suggested and I've been impressed not only by the change of behavior in my students, but also of my growing confidence in maintaining classroom discipline. Now I spend more time teaching instead of spending precious time dealing with defiant students. This is the best book I've found to help me foster learning among the students I see infrequently.

Common Sense
A great book on classroom management - others have stated that it is mostly common sense and this is true. That is not to say it is not good advice. This book is more of an overview and outline for thinking about classroom management. There are specific strategies presented but as above it if you want an in depth, super detailed plan this is not it. I will definitely implement the ideas in the book but not all are possible. For instance two ideas presented are keeping kids after school or giving them prefered activity time. I know that many schools would not be ok with this approach although as Jones describes it the time IS ACADEMIC and IS NOT free time.

It works!
Research-based practical strategies, tips and tools for classroom management. I bought and read the book, then took the training (highly recommended!) and then began implementing the recommended changes to my classroom and teaching. What a difference! Biggest change was in my stress level, next was how well each of their ideas worked. I've been teaching for 20 years and WISH I read this book 20 years ago!!

Positive behavioral intervention explained better than PBIS manuals.
This is an exceptional effort at explaining how positive behavioral intervention can be used to maintain classroom discipline while maximizing teaching time. I'm not a big fan of the landscape orientation of the book since it makes it awkward to hold and read. However, the content makes it worth the trouble.

Good, basic, easy, to understand information
I really enjoyed reading this helpful book about classroom management. It was clear and helped me to understand what I need to do next as a new teacher. I wish I had read it a year ago! Only bummer is that Fred has retired and the links online are no longer valid.

I wish I had this book my first year of teaching! Beyond philosophy, its realistic and honest. The methods work and after 11 years of teaching it is a good read still because it reminds me of what I should be doing and why, it fine tunes skills.

Most of This is Common Sense
This is required reading for my Career & Technical Education license. I'm having a very hard time going through this book owing to Dr. Jones' self-centeredness. He certainly does think a lot of himself. As for the information, any person who has time vested in a classroom, whether that be teaching, as a paraeducator or casual observer, has seen most of this transpire. Much of what Dr. Jones speaks of is little more than common sense brought to light. Like any other self-help book, or in this case, help others, the entire subject matter is up for debate. I am in no way a fan.

Although Positive Classroom Instruction and Positive Classroom Discipline are also required reading for all teachers, this Third Edition of Fred Jones' classic Tools for Teaching is updated, concise and essential. The Video Toolbox is also highly recommended. Since many Universities are eliminating classroom management classes (all you need is to 'engage' your students - yeah, right...) these tools from Fred Jones are now more important than ever.

I've read a number of books on classroom management but this book really understands the complexity of the interactions between teachers and pupils. I am confident that the many tools outlined in the book will be effective in maintaining a positive learning environment in my classroom this year. I wish I'd read this as an NQT! However I'm disappointed that I purchased the kindle edition as I think a hard copy of the book, which I could then highlight and make notes in. would have been much more useful.
