Thaddeus Hogarth’s Berklee Chromatic Harmonica Method: Foundations for Jazz is an instructional method for chromatic harmonica players who want to learn the instrument and build core jazz foundations. It focuses on developing technique and tone along with sight-reading, while staying useful for blues, pop, and other styles. Music examples are presented in traditional notation plus simplified harmonica tablature to help you locate notes as you learn the instrument’s layout. You will study scale and chord construction and work through practical licks used in jazz and related genres. Included online audio features demonstration tracks and play-along tracks so you can hear the examples clearly and practice with accompaniment. Rather than overwhelming you with unrelated material, the book keeps the focus on essentials that support real playing: clear tone, confident note choice, and stronger reading. These building blocks also support early improvisation by helping you connect what you see on the page to what you hear. The dual-notation approach reduces guesswork, and the audio reinforces timing, articulation, and phrasing so your practice feels musical and goal-driven. Well suited for advancing beginners, developing players, and educators, this guide works for private study, classroom use, or structured practice sessions. Use it as a step-by-step path or as a reference when you want fresh ideas for building lines and improving your overall musicianship on chromatic harmonica. If you are coming from diatonic harmonica or another instrument, the layout guidance and audio examples help you get oriented quickly and confidently, supporting steady and measurable progress. Its clear organization also makes it easy to revisit key concepts as your skills continue to grow. Review: This book is a great introduction to the Chromatic Harmonica! - Thaddeus Hogarth has written a wonderful primer on how to play the chromatic harmonica. He provides a good understanding of jazz theory as well, which is a necessary stratum to mastering this instrument. I studied with Thaddeus privately for two years and he was such a great teacher because he knows how to break down complicated musical ideas into understandable bits. This is remarkable for other great players I know aren't able to explain what they do and why. Thaddeus is a great teacher, and it is clearly on display in this new Berklee instructional book on the chromatic harmonica. Review: A net good - I appreciate very much the approach to learning. There is in this book a thoughtful and useful teaching methodology. However, it's best not to rely on the tabbing notations as errors pop up now and again, for example, in the A and Eb major scales. While unfortunate, it strikes me such errors encourage musicians to focus on sight reading, as well as ear training, a net good.

Fantastic and Informative Book!!!
This book by Thaddeus Hogarth is fantastic! I’m learning to play the Chromatic Harmonica, and this book gives a very thorough path to learning all the details needed to learn the techniques, theory, and has additional resources of audio samples to help! As a professional musician, I find this adaptable to my level of musicianship, and I am positive it will help beginners equally well. It is written in a manner that makes the lessons attainable and fun. A GREAT book that I recommend highly to all learners of all levels of ability. 5 Stars!

More of a question than a review
It’s more of a question. I bought this book along with a 10-hole harmonica without knowing that a standard is 12-hole. Will I still be able to learn with this 10-hole or would I just have to get a 12-hole? Thanks.

Great harmonica study book
If you are new to harmonica methods then get the -also- great book by Max De Aloe method for a broader understanding of the cromatic harmonica -notation, reading in different keys, arpeggios etc. If your goal is to improvise and understand in depth about chord/scale when improvising then this is it. This book is the kind of book that you need to work on by adding exercises to the already ones on the book. Like different key etc. It is very jazzy in its approach and it will make you a more knowledgeable musician too. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in developing their impro skills and jazz understanding. Excellent

Not much of a method except for the wrong one.
This "method" is not really a method. In fact there's not much at all in this book. Excessively big drawings any many empty pages or pages with just a title. It lists the very - very basics of music theory but even there, it makes a capital mistake! All the different "keys" are noted in the key of "C" with added sharps and flats. I've never seen this before, ridiculous!

Deficiente
Viniendo de una institución con tanto renombre esperaba más del libro, desgraciadamente el contenido es deficiente y no aporta. Recomiendo buscar otros libros sobre jazz y/o armónica, este no cumple en ninguno de los 2 temas.
