Most bang for your buck
I spent about 3-4 months researching a gps watch for my runs. I think I read almost every review from DC Rainmaker's blog before I finally came to a decision, I even commented on some to get his input. I highly advise looking up his page if you're in need of a gps/training watch. The main reason I got this watch over, say the Garmin F10, is that I enjoy cycling and swimming and I also do tri's. The Garmin F10 is solely for running so I figured I'd get the multisport watch since that's what I do. I thought about the Garmin 910XT but I couldn't bring myself to spend $400 on the latest and greatest. Wasn't worth it for me. GPS: The watch picks up your location from satellites very quickly. I normally just stand outside for at most a minute and I'm ready to go. The accuracy, I believe, haven't done the math yet, is pretty good. From what the watch says to what I map online, there's only like 0.1-0.3 mile difference, I normally run anywhere from 5 to 15 miles (training for a marathon at the moment). Watch Functions: Garmin Connect - it's a pretty sweet software provided from Garmin. You can load your watch data onto there and look at your splits, elevation, average pace, etc. What I really like about the software is that I can map courses to load onto my watch and use the Virtual Pacer to keep me honest. I can also create workouts on the software to load to my watch. This is much easier to set up on a computer than the watch. I use the workout function for my intervals and tempo runs. Virtual Pacer - I haven't used this a whole lot yet but it's pretty neat in the fact that you can set a range of how fast you want to run and it shows two little people. one is the pacer and the other is you and you'll either be behind or ahead of the pacer. Great for helping you figure out your pace and how to hold that pace. Display - there are a bunch of differernt displays you can set up so it's all about personal preference. I use 4 data points page (dist, time, lap pace, instance pace) those are about the only things I want to know while I'm running. Autolap - great function. You can set it to 1, 2, 3, or even a custom mile and it will automatically do the split for you. I believe you can even set it to time also (haven't tried it yet) Size - the watch itself is a little big, but I barely notice it while I'm running. The strap is very comfortable and doesn't move around a lot, even when I'm doing sprints. Display is crisp and clear. I could go on and on about the watch but there's just so many functions on it and I haven't been able to use them all yet. Overall, the watch is great and has everything that I need to help me train better for my events.

!BEWARE OF GARMIN TECHNICAL SUPPORT!
Garmin's Technical Support is absolutely horrible! As far as basic watch functions and features you can count on decent support but any advanced settings, especially from one model to the next there is nobody from their Level 1 or Level II support that knows what they are doing. i.e., I owned the 205 prior to this model and after calling into tech support, level II told me using Virtual Partner mode, I could create a custom step program where the watch would do a negative split pace using virtual partner without me having to touch or make any manual adjustments on the run. Well as it turned out, the idiot who walked me through that had no idea that model did not have that capability so I ended up wasting my whole morning for nothing. I then found out the 310XT did allow that capability so this is why I bought that. That said, I was trying to create a "Custom" program "adding Step" mode and none of the support people were able to truly understand how to program the watch. In fact, after spending an hour, I finally figured out on my own how to do the step except there was a couple of problems. The fist step using virtual partner, it would alarm when I was slower than my pace range or faster but the second step, meaning it would automatically pace me faster, it would not alarm if I was going slower or faster. I called back tech support and to make a long story short, the idiot managed to not only talk me through erasing all my data I saved, he managed to also corrupt my watch and then laughed about it as if it was some kind of joke. Well I called back asking to speak with a manager, he assured me he would email me, get back to me and do whatever it took to resolve this issue. It's been more than a week and I never got a call back. I will say anybody looking for a serious training device this is a great product but don't rely on tech support to know what they are doing. anyway I do like the features like the adding step program so I can run my marathon splits like the following: Mile 1 and 2 virtual partner will do 7:01 pace. Mile 3 through 9 it will automatically go to 6:56 pace,etc...

First time garmin user
After reading several reviews of the garmin 305 and the new 310 XT I decided to go with the new 310XT for my running (which is what this watch will only be used for.)I run half marathons and wanted something that would let me know whin i hit each mile and track my pace during the race. I have only used the watch several times and am already pleased with its performance. Upon turning it on it finds a satellite within 30 to 40 sec and is ready to go(my father has the 305 and his takes 2 min.)Another feature i like is the virtual running partner, you can set the VP at say 10 min pace and try to keep up or run ahead, and it lets you know if you are falling behind like 30 sec,60,120....ect. The 20 hr battery life is more than i need, but nice to know i have(my father's 305 just makes it through a full marathon on one charge.)Upon being near the USB ANT STICK all data runs are uploaded to the computer, then i can plot my times each lap along with AVG pace. There is a lot of useful information there. I think if if you are into running you can't go wrong with the 310XT, a little high on price but worth it.

My son and me raise, train and race sled dogs. We find that the Garmin 310xt is an excellent tool for tracking our MPH, time and distance.
