UNC is National Coarse thread. **Q: How do you know which end the screw goes in? Seems like ads for rivnets dont differentiate which type you are buying.** A: You drill the hole, make it just big enough for the insert to go into your drilled hole. Place your insert into the hole, the flange (big end) will set on the part you want your insert. You will need a hard bolt like a grade 8 to tighten to expand the insert. As you tighten your bolt the ribbed section of the insert will compress and expand in the hole. Tighten until it becomes held fast into the hole. Remove your bolt and install the rest. Use lots of lube. When I installed the 3/8 inserts into my trailer deck it took 3 grade 8 bolts to complete my install. You need to put alot of pressure to compress the sleeve of the insert. They make a special tool for this but in my experience the tools fail quickly so I use a hard, top quality bolt instead. **Q: Can a bolt be threaded from the opposite end of the nut? I understand that this is not the intended purpose.** A: Yes it could. The thread engagement is more than 1 dia. The dimensions are spot on for the pre drill and grip range. One word of caution though. Buy the tool for doing the install. I was able to install with the "YouTube" DIY tool but they are not east. I broke or bent screws each time I installed one. Harbor Freight has three different levels of tool for the job.If you do try to install with a home built tool, make sure to use a coupling nut as your driver and a high strength bolt for your threaded rod.
