I was concerned about the fabrics age and dye running if I tried to clean it.. Since I am not an expert by any means in cleaning something that old I searched for a product that would clean without much effort.. This product not only cleaned my quilt it restored all the colors to what I think it must have looked originally.. It took stains out.. Took the yellowing of the fabric out and candidly the quilt looks almost brand new.. Now the one thing I will say.. is you have to follow directions.. use the product in the time frame of soaking time... if you do you will be amazes at how well this works.. My quilt soaked for about a week as the directions said.. I would buy this again it works that well.. **Q: Has anyone soaked items in hard water for days? If so, how well did it work? Also, did you need to take any extra steps prior to soaking?** A: We do not have soft water and i soaked following directions with no problem **Q: Can this be used on wool and silk?** A: No. I learned the hard way. It turned my wool/silk shawl into a stinky pile of literal goo in 30 min. **Q: What is in this product?** A: It is used to clean old linens. I did put a bowl on top to keep it submerged. ### ā­ā­ā­ā­ā­ Turns stained yellowed antique clothes bright white! *by K***S on February 11, 2026* Iā€™m an antique dealer with a specialty in antique and retro clothing. Retro Clean is my go-to cleaning agent for cleaning these clothes, and I find it particularly helpful in whitening items that have yellowed with age. My method is to fill a large plastic container with very warm (but not hot) water (I use the container that cheese balls come in), add Retro Clean and swirl it around to dissolve it. Add clothes and add more water to get it to the very top, then put the cover on it. I then wrap it in a towel and place the whole thing in a thermal bag. I then let it sit for 48 hours. Rinse well once the time is up. Once in a while I have to put the items back in, but for the most part they come out a bright white. Note that I have not found this safe for clothing that is dyed. Attached are photos of a 1915 dress that came to me heavily stained.
