If your hat was originally stiff when new you can enhance the straw to more of its original condition by applying steam to the hat. Be very generous with the steam. Then reshape the hat and let it dry thoroughly. The original stiffening agent that is in the hat will be reactivated to a certain extent. Remove surface dirt with a soft brush. Pour a small amount of NuStraw on a soft moist sponge. Rub the spot in a circular motion from the center out. Wipe the area clean with a clean, damp cloth. The first weekend I was in my yard getting ready to do a cook. I happened to touch the brim and to feel my hat touch the grill. When i took it off that evening, the hat appears to be a total loss. I have to apply sunscreen every day before I go out. I had stains on my ears from the brim the crown had stains and i had soot all over my fedora.I did a little research and learned about Brickmore Nustraw Straw Hat Cleaner. I ordered a bottle along with a good horse hair brush to take away dust and grime. The brush was ok but it could not get the grime off my hat with a brush alone. The hat cleaner came two days later. I followed the directions and I could not believe the end result. My hat looks brand new. The cleaner lifted every stain out of my fedora. Grease stains from sun screen and sweat. If you use your straw hat for working outdoors and your sweat stains have really done a number on it then this is NOT going to work. What did work for mine was dish soap, dawn or something comparable. Here are the steps...1. Dust off your hat.2. Lightly wipe off with damp cloth.3. Lightly spray hat with clean water to dampen.4. Using a new dish sponge make a lather with dish soap.5. Lightly lather on soap to hat in circular motion.6. Wipe off excess lather with cloth and repeat.7. Once I was satisfied I took a wet clean cloth to wipe off the hat one last time.8.
