It grows mainly wild in the arid, desert and rocky areas of Yemen. Here you can find the best colour quality of the plant itself. The dried and powdered Katam leaves are obtained a green dyeing powder, very similar to that of the Indigofera (Black Henna). The two powders also look alike in colour, containing some common colouring principles. Katam powder is therefore ideal for getting cold and dark shades but, unlike Black Henna which offers reflections on blue, Katam helps to achieve more purplish shades. It is therefore very useful to achieve cold and dark shades of chestnut, combined with the Walnut Mallo Blend, or useful for composing mahogany shades, combined with burning red, etc. Classic application base of pure powder: brown, dark brown, brown (40-120 minutes). On a light brown background, without or with very few whites, it brings the nuance to dark and cold tones. In the presence of white hair (over 10% approximately, especially if located in a single area) it is recommended to proceed with a double passage of coverage and reflection: Red Henna No. 2 or No. 3 (10-40 minutes); rinse and then apply Katam (40-120 minutes). I use 100% katam to dye my hair and it dyes a cool dark brown very effectively after only 40 mins (I tried a longer dye time once but I didn't like the dark black I got).
