The design is passive, which means that there is no active (electronic) amplification adjustment. This is really not a problem because the device that you connecting to is most likely designed to work with the audio level outputting this coupler. They are built rugged with quality components housed in a durable metal case. While they are not a fancy and flashy solution, they are a reliable and affordable solution when you need to tap into the phone audio to feed another device such as a audio mixer or recorder. We've used these for years with no problems. They work well with both old (analog) and digital phones. If the phone has a "handset" connection you are in business. ### ⭐⭐ 2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I needed *by L***. on Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2013* I thought that the THAT-1 would fill the bill for my needs of conducting an interview over telephone lines with an online radio station. I was using Shure microphones and a small mixer. It was my idea to create a remote interview site that I could use for future interviews in promoting my projects. It was my mistake that it wasn't capable of interfacing properly with my equipment. I returned it and upgraded to the THAT-2 and was very pleased with the results. THAT-1 just wasn't up to the level of quality for my needs. It may work well in a less demanding situation. However the THAT-2 gave profession level performance that was still reasonably priced.
