Their debut Heavy Crown was released in February 2016 to critical acclaim. Initially, the release had been preceded by tragedy when Bain unexpectedly passed away in January. Last in Line, honoring what they knew would be Bain's wish to keep the band moving, brought in renowned bassist Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne) and committed to sustained touring in support of the album. In late 2017, the band gathered in L.A. to start the recording of a second album, which was produced by the band and Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, The End: machine, ex-Dokken), who also helmed Heavy Crown. The genesis of this project is that the original band had a renewed interest in each other and the music they very much helped create in Dio, so they got together to recreate some of that magic and make brand new, modern rock material.I absolutely loved Heavy Crown and have now listened to II completely through enough times to credibly weigh-in. One thing I dig about this band is their superb use of space and pauses, letting the music breathe and flow nicely. Vivian’s signature Gibson sound is bright and felt in every song, although in various moods, textures, etc. His playing is top notch here. Another thing I like is the band’s width of attempted style and contrast throughout the album. Some songs have a distinct “alt rock” vibe at times (Blackout the Sun, The Unkown, Gods and Tyrants), reflect more traditional, up-tempo rock (Year of the Gun, Electrified), swaggering mid-tempo (Give up the Ghost), and even a little punk/thrashy feel (False Flag). Vocalist Andrew Freeman handles multiple styles awesomely and I have come to really appreciate this guy’s unique delivery. Phil Soussan is a tasteful and fitting replacement for the late Jimmy Bain, and Vinny Appice simply continues to add to his rich catologue of quality work- Vinny is no joke and his presence is felt.Overall, if you are looking for new music, to support a modern band working hard to create something new and entertaining, have it be fresh but just familiar enough, than I’d say this release won’t disappoint! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars It's a solid heavy banging compilation by four amazing musicians/writers! Last In Line II *by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2019* Each one of these men are outstanding musicians individually. However, when they came together and wrote the songs for II, it was the start of one of the best fast paced heavy music that I have heard in a long time. I already bought the 2nd cd, just in case the first one get worn out from playing it daily, and several times a day at work. Vivian Campbell is magic and brings the guitar to life. Vinny Appice plays drums like no one I have ever seen. When I asked him about it, he told me that he plays angry, and if you see him play, you might believe it. He is just an amazing force on the drums. Phil Soussan plays the bass somewhat like Vinny plays drums.. He makes it heavy and it sounds awesome. Andrew Freeman has the highest level of energy, and from the time that first song starts, he does not back of the gas until that last song is over. He gets a live audience to interact, and plays off of their energy. Bottom line: Definitely the best I have heard in years, play it loud and enjoy every minute listening to Last In Line II. Love it!! I thought their first album was a masterpiece and this is no slouch either. As a whole I think the debut had a bit more punch but regardless I have enjoyed this record on many repeated listens.Andrew Freeman is one of the finest vocalist in rock today. Vivian Campbell lays down that great tone you want to hear if your a fan.Phil Soussan is a fine replacement for the great Jimmy Bain.
