Review: It has a big screw top that you can open It would also work as a clean-out. - I am a licensed plumber in two different states. I have worked with Oatey products for many decades. I recently purchased a home that is lower than some of the newer-built homes. There's a pump station a block or so away from my home. In the event of an extended power outage, the sewer could possibly back up to my home since it's one of the lower ones. I bought this Oatey Backwater Valve. It has a big screw top that you can open, and you can see the gate or check valve itself and pull it out to service it and clean it if needed. It would also work as a clean-out.The sewer was not deep at my home; it was only about 18 inches below grade I installed this backwater valve, and I put an irrigation box over the top of it. It's been installed for about 3 weeks with no issues whatsoever.

**Q: This is a type of check valve correct? The ability to take the lid off serves what purpose? Could you run a snake down the line with the top off?**
A: Taking the lid off allows you to clear debris out of the valve. Yes--you get full access to the line from the top of the valve. I use it to drain a yard that floods during high tide. Works well.

**Q: Can this valve be used under ground?**
A: Yes, our Backwater valves can be used underground.  You can also install an access sleeve (straight piece of pipe) in order to service the valve at the surface.

**Q: I received this valve and it came with a seal for the flapper. However, the seal will not stay in the grove on the flapper. Any suggestions?**
A: Hi. It comes with 2 O rings,  one is for the flapper, add some syllicon glue, like the used on motor engines,  this backwater works really good,

**Q: Does this fit 3" schedule 40?**
A: Yes, 3" schedule 40 PVC
