## Description

On the face of it, John Denver was an unlikely candidate for pop stardom. He achieved fame with a message of wide-eyed optimism at a time when the U.S.A. was wracked by political scandals, economic uncertainty and the after-effects of the Vietnam War. His boyish looks and wholesome persona went against the grain of a society obsessed with hipness.Denver provided an alternative vision and millions responded to it. A veteran of the folk movement (including a stint with the Chad Mitchell Trio), he emerged as a positive voice who could reach across the generational divide with his music. Included in this definitive set of John Denver's recordings are his many gold and platinum-selling LPs including Poems, Prayers and Promises (with the hits "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Sunshine on My Shoulders"), Rocky Mountain High and Windsong (with such enduring compositions as "Annie's Song" and "I'm Sorry") as well as later forays into country and pop, all of which contain hidden gems worthy of deeper investigation. A highlight of this set is a true rarity, the 1966 LP John Denver Sings, a privately pressed, limited-run album released only to John's friends and family. The recording captures Denver's youthful idealism and guileless spirit qualities that remained a part of his music until his tragic death in a 1997 plane crash. The most complete package to date of John Denver's The Complete Studio Albums.Contains 24 original RCA albums released between 1969 and 1986, plus Denver's rare privately pressed 1966 LP, John Denver Sings. Many of these albums have never been available on CD. Each individual album is packaged in a replica mini-LP sleeve reproducing that album's original cover art. Albums Included:1.Rhymes and Reasons (1969) 2.Take Me To Tomorrow (1970) 3.Whose Garden Was This (1970) 4.Poems, Prayers and Promises (1971) 5.Aerie (1971) 6.Rocky Mountain High (1972) 7.Farewell Andromeda (1973) 8.John Denver's Greatest Hits (1973) 9.Back Home Again (1974) 10.An Evening with John Denver (1975) 2 CDs 11.Windsong (1975) 12.Rocky Mountain Christmas (1975) 13.Spirit (1976) 14.John Denver's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 (1977) 15.I Want to Live (1977) 16.John Denver (1979) 17.Autograph (1980) 18.Some Days are Diamonds (1981) 19.Seasons of the Heart (1982) 20.It's About Time (1983) 21.John Denver's Greatest Hits Vol. 3 (1985) 22.Dreamland Express (1985) 23.One World (1986) 24.John Denver Sings (Private Press Album)

Review: great for both serious and casual fans - I've now owned this set for about 3 years, and I still absolutely love it. I listen mostly in the car, but the sound quality on my computer and home stereo is also quite good. I can pick and choose any album and enjoy it, but the fascinating thing for me has been listening to each album in chronological order and seeing the way Denver grew in his craft, in both his singing and his song-writing ability. The first three albums reflect the 1969-70 period in which they were recorded. A couple of the later ones have a definite 80s feel to them. The albums in the middle are among his very best and most famous work. There are 3 greatest hits volumes - some have complained about that, thinking mistakenly they dilute the price per album/song quality of the set. But Denver re-recorded the songs for each one, rather than just pulling the tracks off the original albums - this was something he did regularly, as he recognized his own growth and wanted to give his fans the very best, sometimes even upgrading the arrangements as well. This is how he got Pavarotti to join him in "Perhaps Love", for example. Plus, there are a lot of additional recordings scattered here and there, including a live recording set from Red Rocks, CO on the Evening With CDs. You definitely get your money's worth. For the true fan, this is a must-have. For the casual fan, this is a great, inexpensive way to get to know Denver's music through the bulk of his career. If you're only familiar with his songs on the radio, I could make a "greatest non-hits" set that would rival those three volumes, from early songs such as Wooden Indian to later ones like the great anthem Let Us Begin, while in between you have such great songs as Thirsty Boots, Whalebones and Crosses, American Child. Eclipse, Pegasus, Like A Sad Song, and Ripplin' Waters, just to name a few. If you want to get picky, the packaging of each CD into a cardboard sleeve leaves a lot to be desired. I've had to tape one back together, as some of the disks are hard to get out of their fold-over sleeves. Note that this set only includes the RCA recordings - he later created about 5-8 more albums plus numerous live recordings that are not part of this set. But I for one am VERY glad to have it. I LOVE THIS SET!!
Review: A Powerful Overview - This review is going to be a work-in-progress, with 25 CDs to work my way through, but there are some things that can be said right up front. First, I previously owned not a single note of music by John Denver -- not that I wasn't familiar with his singles (you couldn't avoid them on the radio in the 1970s) or his work as a member of the Mitchell Trio. I bought this set in the wake of the showing of the PBS documentary on his life and career. Now, about the first eight discs -- to start with, their sound is superb (and no, I haven't compared them to other issues of the same titles). And this set is nicely put together as it includes his three greatest hits collections, so we get the free-standing singles and single-edits that most fans remember well -- I only wish Sony Music would have been that considerate in planning the Sam Cooke RCA Albums Collection. Listening to Denver's early albums, especially the first three or four, it's also necessary to either (A) be old enough to remember what albums were supposed to be back in 1969-1970-1971, or (B) to be aware, historically, of how these releases were planned and executed at the time -- which is to say, albums were career-builders, showcases for performing and interpretive talent, but not necessarily ground-breaking statements. Indeed, among popular artists of the late 1960s and early 1970s, only a relative handful of people (the Beatles, Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Joan Baez, the Who) sought to make profound statements that would resonate across the ages. And Denver was not one of these, yet -- he was just looking to deliver a long-player for his record label and to keep his career going and get more bookings and airplay while advancing his craft. And if you listen to an album like WHOSE GARDEN WAS THIS with that thought in mind, then the album comes off as far more genial -- and all the more vital and congenial as a listening experience -- on that basis, than it might seem if one merely dismisses it as mostly a bunch of covers of other people's songs (which, yes, it was, but so what?) with an original or two (I happen to LOVE Denver's own "Sail Away Home"). And maybe that overview, going back over 40 years, is where the real value of this set is, as you see the musical (and political, and social) world that Denver rose out of, to distinguish himself. More to follow.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Happy With My Purchase
*by M***E on March 4, 2014*

I wanted to replace my vinyl John Denver record collection with cds but did not want to have the expense of buying the cds one at a time. This collection is perfect. The quality is excellent although the print is small on the covers. They are exact reprints of the original album jackets. I appreciate the value of this purchase. To get 20 cds for a pinch over $100 was a bargain as far as I am concerned. The bonus cd is a treasure to have.
