A closely-observed, action-packed retelling of the story of Homer’s epic The Iliad from master graphic artist Gareth Hinds. Sing to me, O Muse, of the rage of Achilles… A crisis point in the Trojan War – Achilles, hero of the Greeks and leader of the ferocious Myrmidons, smoulders in anger against Agamemnon, the most powerful of the Greek leaders. As long as Achilles refuses to fight, the Greeks are destined to fail, pushed back ever further from the stronghold city of Troy by Hector and Paris’ Trojan army. Above the fighting on Mount Olympus, the gods watch on, each allied to a different warrior and each willing to extend the hand of divine intervention to ensure their success… Battle, glory, pride, death and revenge take centre stage in this classic epic retold by Gareth Hinds in his inimitable graphic style. Review: An excellent retelling of a classic tale - A picture is worth a thousand words, and this version of the classic tale is full of detailed images, drawn with love. Hinds doesn't limit himself to merely telling the story, he also shows us maps of the ancient locations, and provides a detalied explanation of the context of this famed trojan war. He provides a near exhaustive list of all the characters involved, and their respective feats (or defeats) in the plains of ancient Troy. Some consider this attention to detail as detrimental, but I consider it entirely positive. This is not necessarily a children's book (though it is rather child friendly) as it is full of blood and violence, and some sexual references, though never in a distasteful manner. In conclusion, this new adaptation by Gareth Hinds a great, innovative version of the classic tale. Filled with both words and images, it captures the depth of The Iliad while also captivating our minds with wonderful illustrations. Do not pay attention to the bad reviews, this is a very enjoyable version, well worth the price. Even as an 8 year old, I believe I would have greatly enjoyed this book. Reccommended for all lovers of history, greeks (or achaeans as Homer called them) and ancient battles. Review: A seminal work for the modern appreciation of Homer - I bought this for myself years ago and loved it. Faithful to the original, and such a tremendous work! Imagine over 200 pages of thoroughly illustrated images, well researched, several per page! You can see the love for the originial! introduced it to my 6 year old son half a year ago, and he reads in it every day. I have read it out loud for him 2 times all the way through. He says it is his favourite book of all book. I have read for him every day for months now at his request, some passages he just cannot get enough of. Made me pick up the original with a fresh appreciation. He also loved the Odyssey by Gareth Hinds, but this is his obsession :)

Epic story in modern comics
Fantastic book and illustrations. Been reading together with my 9 year-old son and we both love it. Probably recommended for older children if reading on their own.

Helpful as an introduction - and in two ways.
I enjoyed this. It’s a well thought-through short version of the Iliad. I can see it being useful both for someone looking for a condensed, easy-access version of the Iliad (maybe a newcomer to Greek literature). And it could also be helpful for someone reading or rereading the whole text: a quick read through of each book/chapter in this graphic version, immediately before engaging with the full text, might help the reader find/maintain their bearings.

An excellent graphic novel for all ages
This graphic novel is an excellent introduction for all readers, adults and children alike, to classical literature. Gareth Hinds' adaptation of Homer's 'The Iliad' is thorough but does not overcomplicate the story for young readers. Another review criticized Hinds' work as being "word heavy", but although there is indeed alot of writing on most pages, the words compliment the illustrations, they do not detract from them. The drawings and the prose fit together like a hand in a glove. It is great value for money at approximately 250 fully illustrated pages, with the illustrations capturing the drama of the story very accurately. It takes great skill to retell the story for it to be both engaging for younger readers but detailed enough for teens or adults to enjoy. Overall, I highly recommend this graphic novel as Hinds' has made both 'The Iliad', and his other adaptation of Homer's work, 'The Odyssey', very accessible to a wide range of reading abilities.

Thank you, Mr. Hinds! Mission accomplished!
First of all, I am biased: I believe that The Iliad is both the pinnacle and the foundation for all Western literature, and one of life's great joys for me was learning to read the immortal words of Homer in ancient Greek when I was a teenager. So imagine the thrill of seeing those immortal words translated into a graphic format! This is a complex tale, told in complex language, with an impossibly wide cast of characters in a culture that seems far away from our modern world, and yet it all comes alive on the pages of this graphic novel, just as relevant to our current events now as it was almost 3000 years ago. I am the parent of two students with learning challenges, and I am using this book to make the classics accessible to them. There is nothing simple or easy about the Iliad. The author streamlines the story somewhat, and uses different types of visual cues and reader guides to facilitate reading comprehension. At the same time, the author uses many of Homer's narrative tricks to bring specific moments to life. This book does contain plenty of violence, human trafficking and references to rape (it's about a war), so parents should exercise their judgement about appropriateness for children or young teens. It's approximately a 7th grade reading level. But it's ideal for getting young adventure-lovers hooked on heavy-hitting literature - definitely not for the Charlotte's Web crowd. As soon as the book arrived on my doorstep, I went straight to the scene of Priam clasping the knees of Achilles, and it was exactly as I'd hoped, exactly as Homer describes it. That scene answers some of life's big questions: How do you forgive the unforgivable? What does it mean to be human? What does anything mean? The author's artwork includes some archaeological touches from the time period of the Trojan War, very nice to see. The overall effect is stunning, and captures the spirit of Homer's epic poem. I didn't think the author could possibly top his editions of Beowulf, King Lear or The Odyssey, but here it is: the cornerstone of Western literature. Highly recommended for adults, teens and tweens who are curious about this ancient tale.

Excellent Graphic Novel.
This graphic novel is a great synopsis of the main events of the last year in the Trojan War. Gareth Hinds allows the reader to clearly identify the major characters influencing the final battles. I've tried reading and listening to the Illiad, however, this graphic novel has been the most easy to follow. It also allows me to revisit the audible book version with greater ease.
