## Description

This IDE to Compact Flash SSD Adapter Card allows you to convert a single Compact Flash (CF type I/II) Card or MicroDrive into a bootable IDE Solid State Drive - a simple and convenient way to replace a IDE hard disk drive. The adapter card makes it easy to build your own do-it-yourself SSD (requires CF card or Micro Drive), allowing you to take advantage of the benefits that Solid State storage has to offer. With no moving parts, an SSD is the ideal solution in work environments desiring the key properties of SSD's - low power consumption, no noise, shock resistance, fast access time and low operating temperatures providing cooler and quieter storage than a conventional hard disk drive. Plus, Solid State drives are less susceptible to atmospheric hazards (e.g. dust particles, atmospheric changes etc.), ensuring seamless performance regardless of environmental factors. The adapter is equipped with both a 40 pin (3.5in Desktop HDD) IDE channel or a 44 pin (2.5in Notebook HDD) IDE channel. This unique multi interface board allows the adapter to be used in both regular and small form factor case designs, create a perfect solution for embedded systems.

Review: Life Saver - This adapter has worked wonders in converting my old 386 and 486 computers over to solid state drives. a 4 gig CF card can be formated with maxblast software ddo so that the whole 4 gigs can be recognized. Much better solution than trying to find a 4 gig ide hard drive. I bought several of these to upgrade my old machines with. The down side is that with SOME of the machines the master / slave isn't recognized properly. Sometimes you have to put the ide2cf on a different ide cable from the hard drive or cd-rom. But then you have to remember that machines of this vintage had personalities and even identical hardware would not perform exactly the same. All in all I'm very happy with it. It's allowed me to convert my old machines over to newer technology and keep them going. I highly recommend the ide2cf. One of the advantages this card has over other types is that it does plug into the ribbon cable so that you CAN have two devices on the same cable. That works most of the time. Only 1 out of 5 machines needed to have the ide2cf placed on a different cable from the cd-rom. I have gotten decent speed results with the sandisk 4gb 30mb/s cards. I'm very happy with this product and would recommend it to anyone. One down side is the back of the card has exposed circuitry. I used silicon to glue a small piece of wood to the back, then glued the wood to the top of the floppy drive. This lets me change cf cards without opening the case. works great.
Review: Fast and no issues - great adapter - I bought this to replace a hard drive in a PowerMac G4 with a sawtooth motherboard. The machine has been running about 1 week and no issues. The install was easy and so far the software had no issues recognizing the drive. I’m using a Sandisk Extreme CF card and it is fast. I don’t have benchmarking software but booting and launching programs is 2-3x faster than using the hard drive. I took one star from the value because the back of the board is completely exposed. The hard drive tray for the Mac is all metal. I wish a plastic shield would have been stuck to the bottom of this board to provide extra protection from potential shorts. I have not had any issues but if this was not mounted and just laid inside a computer case I believe there is potential for the adapter to short out. I would buy this again in the future.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Any controller card recs? My Vectra 120 having read/write errors on Dos install...**
A: no this device is a purely passive ide to CF card adapter it ONLY works with UDMA cards and lots of cards are hardcoded as "removable" and this firmware coded bit tends to destroy the ability to use a cf card as an ssd in retro pc's

**Q: Anyone used this with a powerpc mac?**
A: Not sure how to edit my previous response. I did get this working on my Performa 6400/200. Previously I was formatting the drive on my new Mac. My CD-ROM drive isn’t working in this machine. So I couldn’t install a fresh copy of Mac OS on the CF Card. So I attempted to format the cF card on my modern Mac and copy my old File System folder to it. This wouldn’t boot. However, I then though of putting the old HD and this product in the machine at the same time. I was successfully able to format the CF card and copy the File System folder to it and boot.

**Q: Does Slave mode work?**
A: Yes, the IDE2CF does support both Master and Slave mode.
Matt, StarTech.com Support

**Q: Is this adapter detected as a removable or as a fixed drive at the os level? some operating systems (win7) require fixed so trying to find the answer.**
A: Doing a retro 98 .. board detects as a CF ... BUT due to adapter is bootable

May need to /fdisk and set /mbr

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works great as a tiny internal adapter for IDE/PATA to CF, but needs a molex adapter cable.
*by C***R on April 6, 2022*

We bought this as a simple means to format CF Cards as IDE replacements for old DOS based testing equipment. We used a more expensive StarTech adapter for the front facing bays, but didn't need one for the infrequent setups/formats. This was perfectly suited for an old system using IDE/PATA, SATA, SCSCI and duplicating very old but very necessary system drives.
