## Overview

The Live Desert Ironclad Beetle (Asbolus verrucosus) is a hardy, powdery blue insect native to the Southwestern US deserts. Measuring just under an inch, it features a unique wax coating that prevents moisture loss, making it easy to care for in captivity. Known for its fascinating defense mechanism of feigning death, this beetle is a captivating, low-maintenance pet or educational specimen that brings a touch of rugged desert charm to any space.

## Description

The Beetles require little to no additional heat or humidity, and only require dry sand as substrate as well as something to hide in. They cannot climb on smooth surfaces (plastic or glass). No water dish is required, and they can be fed foods such as apples, carrots, dog and cat foods, and etc. Crickets or mealworms that have recently died can be given on occasion or other dead insects. They also like good quality raw hamburger meat in small amounts and grains. They are desert beetles, so the humidity should be kept low. In-fact, the color of the beetles is based on the relative humidity! Beetles living in a cage with higher humidity will turn a blackish color, while beetles that are kept in low humidity, are bright blue! A lower humidity means more colorful beetles. If the humidity is too high, the beetles will die. Blue death feigning beetles do alright at room temperature, but a higher temperature will encourage breeding. Overall, they should be kept between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, (21-30 degrees Celsius) and at a relative humidity of 0-20%.

Review: Great beetles from a great seller - Excellent buying experience. Beetles are healthy and lively. Packaging kept them safe and protected. Our family very much enjoys these funky, low maintenance pets. They are kept in a 5 gal tank with sand substrate and lots of sticks and mulch. We often move the tank around the house to catch the sun coming in from the windows. The beetles are thriving.
Review: Nice insect - very tame - cute - Came packaged well. Our beetle was packaged in between paper towels and leaves. The container was wrapped in newspaper. He was active upon arrival. I had a question and they answered very quickly. They were very polite people. May play dead when you put in enclosure but will quickly start walking around. May not eat on the first day. He has been handled since he arrived. He does not bite and is very hardy.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great low maintenance pet!
*by L***N on June 7, 2019*

I bought these as a birthday gift for my 5 year old daughter. She loves bugs. These did not disappoint! Came healthy and lively and well packaged. They played dead when I transferred them to another container which was cute but quickly rolled back over and went about their business. They don't bite and my daughter holds them a lot. Very easy to maintain! They don't have to have water and hardly ever eat from what I can see. Maybe they are sucking moisture out of the fruits and veggies that we feed them. They don't make a mess and their enclosure will hardly ever have to be cleaned. We recommend.
