I was just hoping she would be willing to use it at night for safety and convenience, but I feared she'd reject it on sight. Turns out she likes it so much she uses it during the day! In fact, she only goes down the hall to her bathroom when she wants to brush her teeth or take a shower. This commode is VERY sturdy and stable and the hand rails are at just the right height for her to get herself up and down. I did not realize it would come with such a sturdy bucket with a lid; I was expecting an open hospital style basin. I also wasn't expecting sample liners with gel pads to absorb liquid. I didn't know those even existed! The first few days I took the whole bucket outside to tie up the bag and dump it, but there is absolutely no leakage, so it's easy to just tie up the bag and take that out by itself. I did some searching and found a different brand of liners/pads which was MUCH less expensive than the brand supplied with this chair and everything is working great. Every day my mother comments on how much she likes not having to trek all the way down the hall with her walker. I can't recommend this highly enough! Update: I noticed the negative reviews about this being too small and flimsy. Please note that my mom is 4' 10" and weighs 100 lbs. It's PLENTY sturdy for her. Could this be used for a 6 year old?** A: Seat opening is slightly oval. Measures 9.5 inches front to back & 8 inches side to side of opening **Q: Can it get wet? What material is it made ?" about** A: It is metal and plastic, for the price it worked well. However if you plan to put in a shower you will have a problem. It has adjustable height legs. The legs thus have holes in them. When you put in shower the water runs down the inside through the holes. You have to take the rubber feet off the ends of each leg and make sure to get the inside of legs dry. The commode part is removable and the chair fits easily over any toilet we had. Once over the toilet is is sturdy enough for someone to push up on the arms. There are a lot nicer ones that will last longer but this was all we needed for the limited time use. If you plan to use in shower and not get legs dry each time, I would expect it to last about 6 months to a year before it rusts out and breaks. The toilet seat and commode bucket are plastic. They can get wet. We used Bleach Wipes to clean. Can't find them in stores but you can on amazon. After six-weeks in hospital and various rehab/physical therapy centers she was able to come home. Initially we were using this so it would be easy for her to get on and off the toilet. When she came home we moved her to a different bedroom with a bathroom which had a regular walk-in shower. Once she strong enough to be able to get on and off the toilet with her own strength we put this in shower for her to use. We'had the product for over a year now.
