I grew up doing this sort of thing. Typically, 3 coats of finish are standard for the tops of tables, desk tops, end & coffee tables, etc. Anything that may have cups, dishes or other things placed on top of it require a good 3 coats of brush finish to help protect it. After applying first coat, allow to dry. Buff with 0000 steel wool (with the grain, not against). Wipe off excess dust. Apply 2nd coat; allow to dry. Buff with 0000 steel wool; wipe off dust. Apply 3rd coat; allow to dry at least 24 hours. If desired, you may once again buff with 0000 steel wool to decrease shine, smooth any rough places, etc. This step is optional & not essential. Also, some people will apply a coat of furniture wax at this point to give it a hand-buffed sheen. This is optional & also not essential. The more coats of finish you apply, the more durable the finish will be. **Q: I think i applied too many coats, too thick, too fast. 3 days later still not dry. What should i do?** A: Try stripping off with paint thinner, then reapply. Was the stain dry when applying the Deft? The company is very helpful, call them. **Q: The can has 4 metal pieces attatched to the lid so as to keep the lid shut. How do I remove them?** A: Not hard. Use pliers. If not available, use a flat-blade screwdriver to GENTLY pry the clips loose. **Q: Can milk paint be applied over the lacquer?
