Its one of my favorites to read with my 2-4 year old grandchildren. They get how funny it is that a cow loves cookies so we get a kick out of each time it repeats. As the rhyme repeats, it adds another animal the farmer feeds so the next time it repeats, I pause and the grandchildren say what food is being fed to the animal. Ok - we have an exorbitant amount of fun saying "slop" for the pigs and really ham it up, making faces apropos of slop . OK - so I am the ham and they follow my lead enthusiastically. In the end, the farmer shares the cookies with the cow and the cow shares its milk with the farmer to dunk his cookies in. Everything is better when we share! Especially laughs... ### ⭐ Rulers and the proletariat *by E***Z on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 15, 2021* The thing I find so interesting about this children's story is the way the insidious line between the proletariat and the ruling class is carefully and gradually introduced.It all starts innocently enough. At the start, the farmer feeds the horse hay, and “the horse just loves to nibble hay. He eats it every single day.” OK, so far, all good. “But the cow loves cookies.” So what are we to make of this- not so clear… Yet.The farmer continues. He feeds the chickens chicken feed, and “they love their feed.” So far, so good. “The farmer feeds the geese each morn. He always gives them sweet, cracked corn.” Sounds like a lovable farmer, right?But then, just a few short pages later- the demeaning of the workers begins:“When Farmer feeds the hogs their slop, they love to eat that gooey glop. They oink and snort; they grunt with glee. They eat like pigs it seems to me.” Can you see where this is going?Meanwhile, while the pigs eat their slop like pigs, “the cow loves cookies.”So how come the cow gets to eat cookies while the rest of the workers eat feed and slop? Yup, you guessed it- she made a deal with management.Farmer (the ruling dictator) gives the cow cookies and she gives him milk and they both enjoy a daily picnic of milk and cookies.
