The divider is self supporting and stands on your charcoal grate to divide the firebox for indirect cooking. The divider measures 19.5 inches across the top and stands 6 inches above the grate. It is designed for the BGE XL and may fit other XL Kamado grills with 24" grills but you should measure your grill carefully to be sure it will fit. The vertical firebox dividers are freestanding and can be configured in different clock positions for 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full coverage to vary the "hot zone". The grates/dividers are laser cut out of ¼” plate steel. Everything that is made out of steel will rust, and if steel gets hot enough it will warp. These are no different and I make no claims or warranties otherwise. Despite that, they should last a good long time and perform as designed. I have been making these for over five years now, and I am still using my original prototype. Cooking with a kamado grill is more of an art than a science, so have fun experimenting. There are many factors that determine how hot and how fast your grill gets up to temperature. By using half the amount of fuel, you can expect it to heat up a little slower, or not reach quite as high of a temperature as it might with a full bowl of charcoal. Using the divider for two zones is especially handy for cooking something like burgers or chicken on the hot side and vegetables on the cool side. If you want to cook your vegetables and sear steaks at very high temperatures, you can fill the bowl and cook the vegetables first at a relatively low temperature, then open the vents for a few minutes until you have an inferno that is ready for the steaks. I would rather have had it fixed in the straight ling configuration, don't see the need to having it in the 1/4th configuration. But solid and works perfect after setup.
