The Dog Mage

Mr. Haddock consistently spins a cracking read. He doesn't weigh you down with lots of exposition and covers a myriad of details in a nice layer of Handwaviun all of which work together to create an interesting and entertaining tale. This latest offering is no exception - a likeable MC, an exciting plot and enough action to please almost anyone. This book won't change the world but it will keep you well entertained for a few hours. What else could you want?

I almost didn’t read this book as the cover makes it look like a horror story. But it isn’t. It’s a good story, if told in a very straight forward way. I like that the author, having given the protagonist power, allows him to use it! And that his enemies are not unrealistically more knowledgeable and powerful than he is. I’m hoping there will be further books with these characters.

And once again another great story no we have to wait for the next story Maybe a sequel would be great

Great idea, well executed and thoroughly enjoyed the story. Certainly suitable for a wide age range.

The premise is good but the pacing of the story is too fast (never thought i'd say that!) And there's no depth to the character- *slight spoiler* for example the mc and fl seem to jump to declaring their undying love for each other over less time than it takes to make a cup of tea and is rather jarring (and thus a bit cringe). Whilst mostly enjoyable this feels more like a story board than a finished and fleshed out novel.

A very good read the story is told in a very strange way a story that could have been spread over 4 book s but saying that this book keeps you reading and has a bespoke story line Mr Haddock could have detailed up the story and made it a classic. But I as still looking forward to the next book!

I love a good book to read on a plane, and haddock’s books are ideal for this. Looking forward to the sequel.

Another outstanding read by one of my all-time favourite authors. I have already read it twice and loved it just as much the second time around. I have read 1000's of fiction books over the years, and this this author is one of my favourites, because the stories are good fun, well written, non-cheesy conversations, good light banter, entertaining, and the main character mainly wins. So perfect entertaining "escapism" and why I read fiction. The author nails it every time. I have all his books and have read all of them at least 3-times each.

I really like the world James Haddock has created. Similar to other books in that the mage abilities grow and the absorbing of power and knowledge. Different enough to be an enjoyable read.

A boy, orphaned and hungry, wishes for less holes in his blanket as he busks in the street. He later finds his blanket has repaired itself. By trial and error he finds that he is a wizard and that it brings power and trouble in equal measure. Light reading, I enjoyed it, but it is more bubblegum than Bach if that makes any sense. I'd like some maps and with more details this book could have been a trilogy. Definitely going to read more by this author.

It reads like an adult fairy-tale. Death and dismemberment happen, but with a repetitive clinical wording that removes the blood and guts - despite the blood and guts. I also loved that the Dog Mage continues to grow and expand, never reaching a limit. Keeps the reader happily awaiting his next feat. I sincerely hope there are more books to follow - Jack still has a ways to go before he takes over the world!
