It does not use batteries. It is a manual grinder. **Q: Do they also make a salt mill? Now using Himalayan rock salt.** A: No, there is not a salt version of the 9-inch Magnum Plus pepper mill. There is a salt version of the 6-inch Magnum. It is available in white and grinds coarse sea salt. We do not recommend customers use Celtic, Grey, Himalayan or Pink salt in our mills as those salts are not fully dried and can gum up or clog the teeth of the ceramic grinding mechanism. Salt and Pepper grinders are designed to crush/grind dry, brittle material. "Moist" or not "damp" peppercorns or salt crystals are never recommended. Coarse sea salt is our recommendation - with the crystals about the size of a peppercorn.
