With the included software by SilverFast, you can choose the film used such as Kodak Plus ISO 200 (just look at your film strip to ID the film type). The built in template auto calibrates and images turn out accurately. There are other options such as dust removal. The negatives scan fast even at 48bit 2400DPI. It's convenient to have 2 film trays as once is scanning you can load the other. Each tray can hold up 3 strips of film. I am glad to have gotten rid of an older outdated CanoScan 4400 which could take hours and was unable to produce accurate reproductions. Only word of caution is the assembly in connecting the top lid cover with the bottom platen glass section. There's a small cable built in to the top of the scanner which has about 9 pins. There's no marker letting you know which side is up or down on the cable itself. Just be sure to align correctly before inserting so that the pins don't get bent. Use a flashlight if necessary to get a closer look. Overall a great buy. Windows 10 and 11 drivers are on the Epson website. I can read the specs, interested in your direct experience.** A: The V850 is much better. The film/slide holders are better. We had a problem scanning textured photos with the V600, but not with the V850. The scans of film and slides are better. Glad that we updated. **Q: How do you use the fluid mount tray?. Does the film get wet?. Can you use it without the fluid ?. Thank you** A: I would Google/YouTube "Wet Scanning" to get more details. But, to answer your question, yes the film will get wet. You put special fluid in the tray and then put your negative in it. At a basic level, wet scanning will help at filling in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds quite a few steps (and time) to your workflow process. Unless you were working on a special project (books, etc.), going to make large prints, I wouldn't wet scan. **Q: So load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one in a seperate file? Can you load on several photos and auto cut into files?** A: You can, yes. The software (Silverlight) lets you do batch scanning where you set the multiple scan areas and then hit batch and it scans them in order. You must set the scan area for the tray as well (Not automatic), but it works without the trays as well. **Q: how does this compare to the Plustek for 35mm scans?** A: I agree with B. Menke on this. While I do not have a Plustek, I do use a primefilm xas (and before a primefilm xa) for 35mm film scanning, A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will give better scans than a flatbed can. However, the Epson V850 is more versatile and I use it for medium and large format film. I bought it to scan a lot of old family photgraphs. It does high resolution, and both color and black and white have turned out very well. It is heavy and large, so needs a big spot on a table or desk. I think it's overkill if you're just looking to scan documents. The lid is heavy and and I've not left it open on its own - I have cats who are extremely helpful and don't want to risk it being slammed down. There is no autofeed, so it's slow, but the quality is outstanding. The dust removal works well. It also scans negatives and slides, but I've not gotten to trying that yet. I do have a good amount of old 4x5 negatives to investigate and few boxes of old slides, and will update once I test those features.
