(1) These initial studies from Japan spawned two new, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials by Russian scientists involving 150 obese women. What the Russian scientists hypothesized was that fucoxanthin appeared to have strong thermogenic (fat burning) properties, especially on stored fat and, in particular, on white adipose (fat) tissue in the abdomen. The initial findings from these studies were truly amazing. Those who received fucoxanthin lost an average of 14.5 pounds in just sixteen weeks, versus those who received the placebo pill, who lost only 3 pounds.
