I actually like the grey color better than a true black. Under blue lights it still looks 'black' and provides excellent color contrast and pop to corals and fish, all while making the tank feel brighter versus a true black sand (I previously used black diamond blasting sand).One thing to note is that there is a broad range of particle sizes, all the way from fine dust to a few chunks up to ~8mm across. It does need to be rinsed thoroughly to remove the fines. The more you stir it and rinse it, the less particulates will remain in the tank. IMO it's worth it for this really unique substrate.I have a blue star leopard wrasse that is perfectly happy sleeping in this substrate. I also have a small Two Spot sand sifting goby that seems to be doing well. He likes to pick up and move around the larger pieces, then sift through the finer stuff underneath.
